Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The class will be started by a short talk about how I spent my last weekend and the things that happened to me.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask my students to tell me about their last weekend.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will choose three of my Ss sentences to write in the correct past simple form on the board.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the meaning by drawing a timeline on the board and asking my students some CCQs: Are the sentences about the past, present, or future? (past). Are the completed/finished in the past? (yes). Can I mention the time they happened? (yes). I will tell them about the regular verbs that receive an ed to form the past simple and we will check the irregular verbs list at the back of the book. The correct pronunciation of the verbs when they receive ed will be coverd too. play --> played /d/. ask --> asked /t/. create --> created /Id/.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are going to do a gap filling task on page 120 of the SB individually in 4 minutes. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then the answers will be checked with the whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students are going to be divided into groups of 4. They will have 5 minutes to talk about their best holiday ever. Then they will share with the class who they think had the best holiday in their group. They will be monitored and feedback will be given at the end.
