Description

Students read an article about Charlotte, a woman who helps her father find a partner. The lesson develops reading for gist and detail, with a short vocabulary focus on personality adjectives (talkative, introverted, extroverted, stupid).

Materials

Abc Student book
Abc Whiteboard

Main Aims

  • To develop students' reading skills - reading for gist and for specific information - through an engaging article about family and dating.

Subsidiary Aims

  • 1. To clarify and practice the meaning, form, and pronunciation of four adjectives describing personality (talkative, introverted, extroverted, stupid). 2. To encourage students to express personal opinions related to the text in a short discussion

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To introduce the topic and activate students' interest in relationships and family.

First, I am going to the photo of Charlotte and her father, Clint. Then I ask students, "Who do you think these people are?", "What is happening in this picture?", "What do you think the title of this text means?". After that, I will elicit a few short responses and write key ideas on the board (e.g., father, daughter, dating, help). At the end of this stage, I will tell the students that "we'll read about a woman who wants to help her dad find love".

Pre-reading (8-10 minutes) • To pre-teach and clarify key adjectives that describe people's personalities (talkative, introverted, extroverted, stupid).

Firstly, I will write the four adjectives on the board. Then I will clarify the meaning of the adjectives through CCQs and examples. For example, I will write "Talkative"---> "Do they speak a lot or a little?"---> "A lot", "Introverted"---> "Do they like big parties?"---> No, "Extroverted"---> "Do they enjoy being with many people?"---> "Yes", "Stupid", "Is it polite or rude to say someone is stupid?"---> "Rude". Then, I will practice the pronunciation of these words with the students.

While-reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To practice skimming for the main idea of the text.

In this stage, students will read the text. They are asked to find information about Clint, including his age, job, marital status, personality, and ideal partner. They are asked to find the information through skimming the text.

While-reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To read for specific details and deeper understanding of the relationship between Charlotte and Clint.

In this stage, I am going to ask students to read the text again and then answer the following questions: -Why does Charlotte want to find Clint a partner? -How do we know Charlotte and Clint are close? -What was dating like when Clint was young? -How does Clint find dating now, and how has Charlotte helped him? I will ask them to check their answers in pairs.

Post-reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

The students will be asked to discuss the following questions in groups of 3: Do you think Charlotte is the best person to help find her dad a date? Why? After students discuss their comments in groups, I am going to ask them to share their thoughts with the whole class.
