Procedure (35-46 minutes)
Focus Ss’ attention on the pictures using G-Slide. Ask: Where would you see these things? (HomeCare: on an identity card of a social or community worker. Handle with care: on a box containing glassware or fragile items. Essential care: on some type of beauty products, skin cream, etc.). There is a word repeated in these things, could you find it? (care). Do you have any experience of looking after very young children or elderly people, perhaps members of your own family?
Share G-Slide via chat. Tell Ss they will listen to four mini conversations1-4 and need to decide what the topic is for each one. Ss write down their responses on the shown table. When Ss have done it, confirm answers: Conversation 1 T.V remote. Conversation 2 Driving in the icy conditions. Conversation 3 Dress sense. Conversation 4 Privilege benefits Ask CCQs: Have you ever driven when the roads are icy? (if so, how did you feel?) What does dress-sense refer to? (a person’s ability to choose and wear clothing, it could be good or bad). What do privilege benefits include? (facilities and services that employers provide to their employees to encourage them).
Screen share the G-Form and draw attention to the audioscript of the four short conversations. Point out the four gabs at the end of each one in the text. Ss listen again and choose the correct word. Ss work individually. Check answers OC. Answers: 1- careless. 2- be careful. 3- I couldn’t care less. 3- health care.
Meaning Demonstrate activity using G-Slide. Ss should match the words and phrases in the box to the definitions. Answers: 1-health care. 2- take care of 3- careless 4- I couldn’t care less. 5- carefree 6- a carer 7- day care 8- be careful . When Ss have done matching, confirm answers and ask CCQs: Which one has a negative meaning: careless or carefree? (careless). Does carefree mean happy? (yes). Why? (because it conveys the meaning of no worries and stresses). What are some professions the same as a carer? (a nurse, a nursing assistant, care assistant, support worker,... ). Form Post G-Form link in chat, tell Ss to read the statements related to form of some words and phrases, and do the multiple choice. Give OC feedback. Answers: 1- Are careless and carefree adjectives? (yes). 2- Which phrase includes the word ‘care ‘as a verb? (I couldn’t care less). 3- What part of speech is the word ‘care ‘ in ‘ day care ‘ and ‘ health care ‘ ? (a noun) 4- In the phrase: be without a care in the world, is the word ‘care ‘countable or uncountable? (countable, since it has meaning of a worry or a task). 5- What type of language function does the phrase: ‘ Be careful’ serve? (a warning). Pronunciation Ask Ss to check the word stress on these phrases: health care, day care, carer, careless, carefree. Share G-Slide in chat , ask Ss where is the stree: in the first or in the second syllable?. Answers: First word stree: CARE less, CARE free, CARer - Second word stress: health CARE, day CARE. Ask Ss drill them individually.
Show G-Slide, ask Ss to complete the sentences with words and phrases from the box.Ss do it individually, then comprare answers in BORs . check answers OB. Answers: 1- Be careful 2- careless 3- handle with care 4- care 5- caring 6- take care
Draw Ss attention to the topics on the G-Slide: 1- We can learn many things from caring for other people. 2- Not everyone is suited to a caring role. Ss can agree or disagree with the topics, give reasons and examples to strengthen their arguments. Ss work individually, write down notes, then nominate Ss one by one in turn to start a talk while others listening. Ask : Do you agree or disagree with the speaker? giving reasons.
