Description

In this lesson, students will practice listening for gist and detail while listening to a podcast about sleeping habits. The lesson begins with vocabulary instruction and concludes with class discussion.

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for gist and specific information in the context of “Sleeping Habits”

Subsidiary Aims

  • To increase student vocabulary and familiarity with word forms.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss discuss questions taken from the book. Do you usually sleep with your bedroom completely dark, or with the curtains or blinds open? Do you have problems sleeping if there's too much or not enough light for you? What temperature do you like the bedroom to be?

Pre-Listening Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by highlighting vocabulary

MEANING Ss think-pair-share matching vocabulary words to definitions. 1. _____ cliffhanger a) a number representing a particular amount, especially one given in official information 2. _____ cross b) a situation in a story, film, competition, etc. that is very exciting because you cannot guess what will happen next, or you do not find out immediately what happens next 3. _____ figure c) annoyed or quite angry 4. _____ spine d) the row of small bones that are connected together down the middle of the back T writes answers on the board, discusses disagreements. FORM Ss think-pair-share identifying the parts of speech of the four vocabulary words. T writes answers on the board, discusses disagreements. PRONUNCIATION After repeating T’s modelling of the their pronunciation, Ss think-pair-share counting the syllables in vocabulary word and determining which syllables are stressed in the multi-syllable words. Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

After reading the questions, Ss listen to the recording and discuss the answers: 1. Who are we listening to? 2. Do you agree with him?

Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Ss put single-sentence summaries of the suggestions from the text in the order that they hear them. Ss have the option of noting the reasoning behind the suggestions and which suggestions feather the target vocabulary. 1. _____ a) Don’t worry about caffeine. 2. _____ b) Eat dinner early. 3. _____ c) Get the right amount of sleep for you. 4. _____ d) Relax by reading a book before you sleep. 5. _____ e) Sleep alone. 6. _____ f) Sleep in bedding made of natural fabrics. 7. _____ g) Sleep with the window open. 8. _____ h) Use pillows to keep your body in the correct position. Ss compare answers, share the with T. T writes answers on the board, discusses disagreements.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss discuss questions. 1. Do you follow any of these suggestions already? 2. Will you follow any of them in the future?
