Description

In this lesson students will practice their speaking skills through the context of achievements.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking fluency practice in the context of talking about a general achievement and achievements of a particular person.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Practice expressing opinion with word stress in sentences.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Have a Google slide: "What is the achievement you are most proud of in life?" Tell them what my greatest achievement is. Have students ask each other the question.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Have students read text about MLK, Ghandi and the railroad. Have them take a short quiz about their achievements.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Show the students several useful languages phrases to talk about other people's achievements. Go over Meaning, Form and Pronunciation.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Tell the students they are going to talk about achievements with a partner. Give them 6 minutes to write down their discussion points: 1 person's achievements and one general achievement. Try to have at least 4 achievements/reasons you chose this person or thing. Turn off my camera and allow them to discuss in partners. Ask them how many minutes do they have? How many discussion points? 4 For what? One person, one general achievement

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Observe students while they are discussing. Write down any errors or miscommunications to go over at the very end of class.
