TP 7
A1 level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
The main aim of this lesson is to provide product writing practice of short, informal, personal update messages - using postcard writing as a vehicle. Student will organize ideas into the stages of a postcard (greetings and update, more news, and closing and connection). They will learn and practice using contractions and ellipses, both of which help create a natural, informal writing style.
Subsidiary Aims
-
The sub-aims of this lesson include providing clarification and practice of formulaic postcard expressions, such as "wish you were here" and "see you soon" as well as simple vacation vocabulary words (e.g., words for weather and vacation activities).
Procedure (35-43 minutes)
Slide 1: (30 seconds) T show pictures of postcards and asks Ss what they are, providing a multiple-choice answer: (a) letters, (b) postcards, (c) snapshots, and (d) greeting cards. The answer is (b). CCQ: T asks student if people write postcards when they are on vacation. Answer = yes. ===================================== Slide 2: (1 minute) T shows Ss some content that people commonly write in postcards. T asks Ss to match each of the following content items with the corresponding picture that represents it: greetings, location, weather, activities, and feelings. T will demonstrate by matching the first one herself. Answers: greetings = picture d, their location = picture a, the weather = picture b, the activities they are doing = picture c, and how they are feeling = picture e. CCQ: Is happy a feeling or an activity? Answer = feeling. ======================== Slides 3-6: (5 minutes): T asks Ss to pretend they are on vacation and answer the questions on the slide with their name on them. T completes example slide to demonstrate how to do it. T distributes the link to the slides and instructs them on how to find the slide with their name on it. T asks Ss to give a thumbs up when they find their slide. The questions (e.g., "where are you?", "how are you feeling?", etc.) are open ended but example vocabulary is provided to assist with the exercise. T monitors slides completion and asks each Ss to read their slide in Open Class (OC) when the exercise is over. CCQ: T asks a student is this where you live or where you would like to vacation? Answer = vacation.
Slide 7 and Google Form: (4 minutes) Show Sofia's (gist) postcard text on Google Forms. Tell them they have 2 minutes to read and chose an answer to each of the four questions about the postcard. ICQ: T asks Ss how many minutes they have. Answer = 2 minutes. T asks Ss to press submit and T checks and displays answers (Lisbon, sunny, happy, walking/exploring/eating, informal) in OCFB. =================== Slides 8-11: (3 minutes): T demonstrates how to move the yellow text blocks with "greeting", "update", "more news", and "closing" over the relevant parts of the example post card. T asks Ss to complete the same activity on the slide with their name on it. T distributes the link to the slides and instructs them on how to find the slide with their name on it. T asks Ss to give a thumbs up when they find their slide. T monitors slides completion. After complete, T reviews answers in OCFB. CCQ: T asks Ss, which comes first: greeting or closing? Answer = greeting.
Slide 12 and Google Forms (2 minutes): T asks Ss to complete short quiz on greeting and closing phrases on Google Forms in 1 minute and submit when complete. T displays and reviews answer in OCFB. Answers: first question = first answer, second question = third answer. ICQ: How many minutes do you have? Answer = one minute. ======================= Slide 13 (1 minute): T calls on Ss to answer questions about ellipses on slide 13. Answers: 1 = c, 2 = a. CCQ: Does an ellipsis go at the beginning of a sentence? Answer = no. ============== Slides 14-17 (4 minutes): T pairs Ss in BOR to complete the exercise (replacing 4 pairs or words with contractions) in 3 minutes. T completes the first one as demonstration. T reviews slides for completion and reviews answers with the group in OCFB. ICQ: Do you work by yourself? Answer = no, I work with a partner. CCQ: Does a contraction turn 2 words into 1 word? Answer = yes.
Slides 18-21: (15 minutes) T asks Ss to take 12 minutes to pretend they are on vacation and write their own postcard content on the slide with their name on it, incorporating at least one of each of the following: greeting, feeling, weather, activity, contraction, ellipses, and closing. T reminds Ss of slides 3-6, where they pretended to be on vacation and wrote their location, their feelings, the weather, and an activity they were participating in. This will help them get started. T completes slide 18 as an example and shares link with slides with Ss, asking them to give a thumbs up when they've found the slides with their name on them. ICQs: T asks Ss what they are pretending to write? Answer = a postcard. T asks Ss how long they have. Answer = 12 minutes. T monitors slides for completion.
Slides 19-21: (6 minutes) T highlights the location of the "Partner confirms" checklist and asks Ss to review another student's work for 2 minutes. T assigns a completed S slide to another S so that S can confirm whether or not the original S included the desired content in their postcard by putting an x in the column "Partner confirms" on the line next to each content item (i.e., greeting, location, feeling, weather, activity, contraction, ellipsis, and closing). T demonstrates. ICQ: T asks S which slide they are reviewing. T puts paired Ss BORs to give oral FB based on their checklist for 2 minutes. ICQ: How many minutes do you have? Answer = 2 minutes. T monitors BORs and looks for samples for DEC. ========= Slide 22 (1 minute) Give DEC based on ellipses, common postcard vocabulary and expressions, and use of contractions.
