Description

In this lesson, students learn about the second conditional. The lesson starts with a discussion about winning a lottery so that the students understand when to use this grammar structure. Then, there is a focus on the form and structure of the second conditional. After that, move on to controlled practice and finally, the lesson ends with a free practice stage.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The class will be started by a short talk about an unreal situation like winning a lottery.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will choose two or three sentences from the discussion we had and I will write them in the correct form.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I use the sentences that I wrote on the board to ask students some CCQs: If I won the lottery, I would buy a car. Did I win the lottery? No Is this real or imaginary? Imaginary At this time I will separate the clauses to show the students the structure and then I will elicit the form by asking some CCQs: How many clauses are there in this sentence? Two Which one is the main Clause? the second one What tense do we use for if? Past simple What word do we use with the result? Would If + past simple , would + base verb Then I will work on the intonation part: Rising intonation in If-clause and falling intonation in main clause.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are going to do a task on page 143 of the SB in 5 minutes individually. The answers will be checked with the WC.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

students are going to be divided into groups of 3 or 4. They will have 10 minutes to talk about what superpower they would like to have and what would they do with it. They will be monitored and feedback will be given at the end if needed.
