The lesson sets a general context of Places in a City to provide exposure to Negative Contractions (isn't and aren't). The context is supported by listening to an audio about the Negative Contractions. They practice their speaking by reflecting on the places around their own homes.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and give controlled practice of there isn't and there aren't in the context of Places in a City.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice in receptive skills by listening for details and revising the positive "there is" and "there are" in the context of Places in a City.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

> Project image: A typical city center street - and Words: Places and Things: buildings, river, car, dogs, airport, bicycles, park, people, trees > Ss talk about the Pic in pairs with your partners. Use: There is/are ........ > Monitor if they use Negative (-) sentences --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Then Elicit with pointing: (+) > Point to bus and see what S says - Tell me a sentence for bus > Point to buildings and see what S says - Tell me a sentence for (elicit with fingers some) building There is .............. There are .............. (-) > Point to a river and see what S says - Tell me a sentence for river > Point to dogs and see what S says - Tell me a sentence for (elicit negative any) dogs > Point to Trees and see what S says - Tell me a sentence for (any)Trees There isn't a .............. There aren't any .............. Maybe: Tell me a (+) and a (-) sentence > There are ...people... but... there aren't any ...dogs...(make it longer) in the street/city. (?) Elicit the Question? (2) Ex.1 Pg.48 (Adopted) Match Picture with Sentence - isn't and aren't game - G.W on the board Show 9 Pics on W.B - Give Ss paper slips with: (+) but "There isn't a" and (+) but "There aren't any" Sentences. 1st they have to look at the Picture and match the Sentence. 2nd they have to stick the Paper on the picture. Example 1 - There is a bank but there isn't a post office.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

(3) Ex.6 (Adopted) - 4mins Write sentences about places near ITI using the prompts (words). Example: 1. a supermarket There isn't a supermarket near ITI. 2. a shopping centre 3. a market 4. any museums 5. a park 6. a square 7. any nice cafes 8, a lot of old houses b. Work in pairs. Compare answers. 2mins

Free Practice (9-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

(4) Ex.8 - 5mins Look at a Picture of a house with words around it (a cinema, hotels etc) 13 in total. Write 8 questions to ask another student about places near his/ her home. Use: Is there a ..... near your home? and Are there any ..... near your home? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9.a Work in pairs Ask your Qs from 8. Make notes on your partner's answers. 2mins Give more information about Places near your home if possible. b. Work in new pairs. Talk about places near your first partner's home. 2mins
