Main Aims

  • Students will be able to use “I like…” and “I don’t like…” correctly in sentences when talking about food.
  • Students will be able to identify and say basic food vocabulary (rice, chicken, milk, bread, pizza, ice cream).

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will develop confidence in expressing their food preferences through songs and games.
  • Students will improve pronunciation of target sounds, particularly the ending /k/ in “like,” the final /s/ in “rice,” and the two-word phrase “ice cream.”

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet the students warmly. Ask “How are you?” and introduce the topic: “Do you like food?”

Song Review (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language “I like / I don’t like” through a familiar song about food.

Play “I Like Food” song to the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Students sing along.

Vocabulary and Grammar Presentation (9-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Play Balloon Game to introduce food vocabulary (rice, chicken, etc.). Choral repetition 3x per word. Then introduce sentence patterns “I like ___ / I don’t like ___.” Drill together. Explain healthy vs. sometimes food.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Tower Game: Before the game begins, the teacher asks each player a question or prompts them to make a sentence using the target language before they come to the front. There will be two students per team. One student (Builder) stacks plastic cups in a tower (3 cups, then 2 cups, then 1 cup). The other student (Collector) waits and then collects all the cups one by one. After collecting, the student grabs the sticky ball and says, “Finished!” loudly. Repeat with other pairs. Encourage speed, teamwork, and clear pronunciation of “like.”

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Musical Bag Pass Each team will get one bag with flashcards inside. While the music plays, students pass a bag around their team. When the music stops, the student holding the bag takes out a food picture and makes a sentence using the target language: “I like ___.” or “I don’t like ___.”

Free Practice (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students have 3 different activitiies: Food Dice Game, Food Plate, and Face Flip Game Activity 1 – Food Dice Game: Students play rock, paper, scissors. The loser rolls the food dice and makes a sentence using the picture, for example: “I like pizza.” or “I don’t like milk.” Activity 2 – Food Plate: Students are given a set of food pictures and a plate divided into two sides — I like and I don’t like. They paste each food picture on the correct side, depending on their preference. After finishing, they play rock, paper, scissors — the winner points to a food on their partner’s plate and makes a sentence, for example: “I like rice.” or “I don’t like milk.” Activity 3 – Face Flip Game: Students play rock–paper–scissors. The winner chooses a food card and places it on the plate. The other student flips the face card — 😊 for I like or 😐 for I don’t like — and says the full sentence aloud. After the activity, a few students are invited to the front to share their food plates and make sentences using “I like…” and “I don’t like…”

Wrap-up and Goodbye (1-2 minutes) • To review key food words and sentence patterns before ending the lesson.

The class reviews the food words and sentences together in chorus.
