On Holiday, Present Continuous Tense

Description

In this lesson, Ss will be introduced Present Continuous Tense in the context of holiday in Spain. The context will be introduced with a picture that follows a postcard later on. Students will practice positive sentences and question forms of Present Continuous Tense through varied activities. They will also focus on Speaking with controlled oral and free practices in order to produce the target language in a meaningful way.

Main Aims

  • To introduce Present Continuous Tense in the context of On Holiday. To practice forming questions and positive sentences by using action verbs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give practice in speaking fluency using grammar introduced and using action verbs during different kinds of activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic

-Have projector ready to project the context. -Have handouts ready to deliver. -Show the picture of a place for holiday in Spain. -Ask Ss to imagine that they are having a holiday there right now. Ask them to tell you what they are doing. eg. I'm swimming. I'm reading a book. I'm walking.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-Prepare the cards for Acting Out game. -Tell Ss in the box there are activities that they are doing on their holiday in Spain. All sentences in each card include an action verb and the sentences are in Present Continuous form. -Model first for Ss. Pick a card from the box and show the action. -eg. "You are swimming." Show the action and elicit the sentence from the Ss. -Ask Ss to pick a card and tell them not to share their sentences. They need to act it. And the other person will say the action. -Monitor and help when necessary. -Take general FB from WC.

Highlighting (5-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language through a reading task

-Project a postcard on the board. -Tell Ss it is a postcard written by Kate,who is having a holiday in Spain. Meg is Kate's best friend so she wants her to know what she's doing now. -Give Ss HOs. -Ask Ss to answer the questions based on the text. Where is Kate now? What are her parents doing? What is David doing? Are her friends riding bikes? -Ask them to check their answers in pairs. -Show the answer key.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Show two example sentences from the text to -Draw a timeline to the board and ask Ss when the action is happening. Then show it on the timeline to clarify that the actions are happening now. -Underline the auxiliary verb and v-ing. Go back to the text and write more examples from it to show positive,negative and question forms of Present Continuous Tense. -Drilling to show sentence stress. Practice pronunciation. IS HE DRINKING TEA NOW NO HE ISNT HE IS EATING

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Project the pictures of Popp the mime artist. In each picture he is showing a different action such as eating,reading,swimming etc. -Give an example before asking them to do the task. Model sentence: "Is he eating in picture a? -No, he isn't. He is riding a bike." -Ask Ss to ask questions as in the example given and answer for each picture. -Monitor and help when necessary.

Free Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Change pairs before giving the task. -Give each pair Picture A and Picture B. -Hold Picture A or B and give an example to show how to do the task. eg. ın Picture A, the man is walking a small dog. -Ask Ss to talk about their pictures to find the differences between them. -Monitor the Ss. -Ask them to tell the differences they found.
