Description

This 45-minute grammar lesson focuses on contrasting the Present Simple and Present Continuous tenses in the context of a normal day versus a day off. Learners will begin by discussing daily routines to activate schemata, then read a short text about Sophie, who is spending her day off, to notice examples of both tenses in context. The target language will be clarified through guided analysis of meaning, form, and pronunciation, supported by CCQs. Students will then complete a controlled practice (gap-fill) activity to consolidate accuracy, followed by a freer speaking task where they personalise the language by comparing their usual routines and what they are doing on a day-off. The lesson aims to develop both grammatical accuracy and spoken fluency.

Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, learners will be better able to use the Present Simple and Present Continuous to talk about routines and actions happening now/around the present time in the context of “a normal day vs a day off.”

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Everyday life in the context of Work - Day off

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To engage students and set the context (normal day vs day off).

T shows a picture showing 3 people at work and asks: - “What do you think these people do on a normal day?” - “What do you think they do when they don't work” The T elicits ideas from the students.

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context and expose learners to target language.

The T gives Ss a short text about Sophie's day off. The T tells the students to read quickly to answer a gist question: - “What is Sophie doing today?” - ”What does she usally do at the weekend?" The T checks answers with the whole class.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw learners’ attention to examples of Present Simple and Present Continuous.

The T asks students to indentify the expressions used to talk about a normal day versus a day off in Sophie's life. Then the T shows the target language.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify meaning, form, and pronunciation of both tenses.

The T conducts CCQs to convey meaning, form and pronunciation. - Sophie and Alex usually go away at the weekend. - Sophie likes alternative music. - Sophie is spending her day off with her husband. - They are listening to Oasis in this moment.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide accuracy practice using both tenses.

The T shares a wordwall link in order to do a gap-fill. The teacher conducts feedback and makes corrections if necessary.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To allow freer production using target language in a meaningful context.

The T asks students to imagine that is a day off. The T shows que questions to discuss: E.G. What do you do usually wear for work/school vs What are you wearing today? The T sets the time and students start working.
