Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan, detailed and inference reading practice using a text about Having a heavy cold in the context the ilness's symptoms

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of Call in sick words in the context of Having a heavy cold


Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T will ask SS about the previous lesson to make them stay focused about the same context. -T will show SS a video about how to call in sick. -T will tell SS to discuss the video in pairs and talk about their experience with similar situations. *When was the last time you called in sick? *What was the reason/illness? *Did it work? *Summarize the conversation with your boss. -T will elicit the topic of the reading passage.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare SS for the reading passage

-T will group the SS in groups of 3. -T will give each group two pack of cards, the first one is with words, the second is with their definition. -SS are to work in group, matching the words with their definition. -T will give SS the answer key on a paper. -T will monitor carefully to catch any problems that SS might have with the words. -Even if there is no problem, T will CCQ some words to make sure SS got the meaning clearly.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-T will present the passage HO to SS. -T will ask SS to read quickly and do the task below. -T will make sure that SS won't read word by word and that they will skim the text to find the purpose of it. ICQs *Are you going to read nd understand every word in the text? *Are you going to read slowly? -SS will check their answer in pairs. -T will present an HO with 8 bits of advice from the text. -SS will read the text to check which three of them are not mentioned in the text. -SS will check their answers in pairs. -T will provide SS with an answer key on the board.

While-Reading #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-T will present an HO to SS with 5 sentences from the text. -SS will read the text in depth in order to decide which sentences and true and which are false. ICQs *Do you need to read every word? *Are you reading slowly? -SS will check their answers with their partner. -T will provide the answer key on a paper to every S.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T will remind SS with the video they watched at the beginning of the lesson. -T will ask SS to do a roleplay, (sick employee and boss). -T will provide the SS with the situation to help generate ideas. -SS will do the roleplay in pairs. -T will ask SS to swap pairs to give them the chance of practicing with more than one person.
