Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide practice of language used for showing interest and asking follow-up questions in the context of informal conversations.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice using the target functional language.
Procedure (38-46 minutes)
• Show photos from SB pp. 44–45. • Ask: “What are the people doing?” “Do you like weekends?” “What did you do last weekend?” • Elicit: chatting about the weekend → today’s topic = talking about weekends with friends. • Highlight informality (friends, not coworkers).
• Gist: Play audio (SB Ex.3a). Learners match speakers (Tim, Emily, Rachel, Simon) to photos (A–D). • Intensive: Play again (SB Ex.3b). Learners decide if sentences are T/F. • Check in pairs → show answer key on slide for quick feedback. • Conduct brief OCFB: “Who had a good weekend? Who didn’t?”
• Display examples from conversations (Ex.4a + 6a). • Meaning: Categorize responses (e.g., “Oh, great!” / “What a shame!” / “You’re joking!”) under emotions → I’m happy for you / I’m sorry for you / I’m surprised. • Elicit when each response is appropriate → highlight register (friendly / informal). • Form: Identify which phrases are fixed vs. variable (e.g., “What ___ you do?”). • Pronunciation: Model and drill for stress and intonation contrast: Rising: Oh, great! (happy, interested) Falling: Oh, right. (neutral, not interested) Show connected speech (You’re → /jə/ joking!).
• Learners complete Workbook p.33 Ex.2a in pairs on Google Form / editable slide. • Task: choose correct response (e.g., “Oh, great!” / “What a shame!”). • Add mini-extension: identify which phrases are suitable for a friend, a coworker, or a teacher. • Check answers via displayed key. • Drill any errors or unnatural intonation.
• Pair learners in BORs. • Give prompt: “Talk about your weekend. Your partner listens and responds using ‘showing interest’ and ‘follow-up question’ phrases.” • Display checklist: ✅ Used at least two showing-interest phrases ✅ Asked two follow-up questions ✅ Sounded natural and interested • Monitor for DEC.
• OCFB: Ask a few pairs to share what their partner did on the weekend. • Display 3–4 sample sentences (anonymized). • Elicit corrections → focus on word order, intonation, appropriacy (tone). • Praise examples of successful communication.
