Description

In this lesson T will introduce the concept of polite requests. Also how to respond to polite requests. In addition the Ss will have an opportunity to practice making polite requests and responses via a quick role play. There will be an overview of form, meaning, and pronunciation. Thought the lesson the SS will be requested to read sentences and or rewrite them using polite request. At the end of the lessons Ss should be able to identify a polite request from a direct command.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used for making polite requests in the context of asking for help when something us wrong or the SS needs help or making everyday interaction requests in a polite manner rather than a command

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for using polite request in a multitude of situations. To get the Ss to think beyond Please as a only word to be used for polite requests, in other words to expand the vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show some pictures of everyday occurrences where things are broken or a person needing help. T will ask the Ss to describe what the pictures show and what they would do. The slide then moves to ask students when they would use polite requests. T will lead with 3 situations and ask the students to name others. Finally the T will show a third slide where a number of leading polite and some direct requests are shown and ask the students to read and if they have used these before. This activity should get the students thinking about request and when they are needed and how to use them.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

T will play a short audio consisting of 3 situations where people have different issues. The first is a person having issues with an ATM that does not work and request some help from someone, The second is a person with a computer that has crashed and she asks for help, and the third is a person calls customer service and tells the person on the phone that he having an issue with with a vacuum cleaner. Ss are to listen to the audio and detect polite request language similar to the one that we had previously seen on the slides. This exercise will be done individually. T might need to play the audio a second time for Ss to listen and identify the target language CCQ. Qdid you hear any requests? A Yes Do you know if ... A. Would you mind ... A. could you tell me could you hold the line please

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will provide a link to a google form where students will be asked to work in pairs and and identify the language as being either polite or direct. Ss will be send to BOR and ask to place XXX on either column, The aim is for Ss to identify the key components of a polite request. After that the Ss are to return to the main class and as a group we would be going over these, T will take this opportunity to solicit from students what makes the request language polite or direct CCQ What makes this a direct request? A there is no Would could may or please Q. If I say "send me the report please". is that a polite request? A No it must include Would you, Can you , Could you

Polite request and reponses (6-8 minutes) • Too help students understand the correlation between a polite request and its corresponding response

to use google slides for a CP and ask students to work in pairs in BOR and complete sentences using the would, sorry of course, could, please or may. The aim here is to give students an opportunity to complete polite requests and also a response to it. After the task in complete the Ss will join the main class and we a group we will review and clarify any questions they may have. T ask CCQ. Q: What makes this sentence polite? A : using Would. Q Can I use May you help me cleaning the house? A: No the request should have a would for the intent to be clear. Q in the sentence : I can't concentrate would you mind turning off the the TV Yes of course can I omit would you mind and just say I can't concentrate turn off the TV... A: No. it is no longer a request it is a command Q Is there a difference between , May I have another and Can I have another. A Both a request one more polite than the other

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T to ask Ss to work in pairs and create a role play dialogue, The dialogue is based on a situation described as one student needed to make a phone call and having issues with reception. The student makes a request and the second students responds to the request with a suggesting, eventually the student borrows the phone and makes the call. This will be used in a multiple of ways pronunciation proper use of language and for DEC' Depending on the number of Ss we will do the exercise again to ensure everyone has an opportunity to participate.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

During the lesson T will provide feedback on the TL used. T last exercise provides an opportunity to provide feedback on FMP T will pay special attention to pronunciation, meaning and appropiacy (is the language used correctly) T will provide samples of language and ask students to Identify any issues or opportunities where the TL could be improved.
