Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Have Ss look at the photo and question. Teach / check "the New Year" (a celebration). Have Ss share their answer to the question: what did you do for the New Year? Write down their responses on the slide. Ask CCQ: “Do people usually spend the New Year with their family and friends? (Yes).”

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Screenshare G-Form. Tell Ss they will hear an audio about three speakers. Ss should identify what each speaker is doing for the New Year. After 2 minutes, ask Ss to submit their answers. Share the link in the chat and confirm that Ss can access it. Play audio once. Use responses to see if Ss struggled with any in OCFB. Answers: Speaker #1: His family is renting a house in the mountains., His friends are coming to stay. Speaker #2: She is having a party on New Year's Eve. Speaker #3: His mother is cooking a special dinner for all the family., Him and his friends are going to the beach., Him and his friends are meeting lots of other people for a big beach party.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Screenshare G-Doc. Tell Ss they will hear the audio again. Show Ss how to complete the first question: fill in the highlighted blanks with the present continuous verb. Give Ss 2 minutes. Share the link in the chat and confirm that Ss can access it. Assign a page to each Ss. Play audio once. Answers: (a) are renting, (b) are coming, (c) I’m having, (d) is cooking, (e) are going, (f) are meeting. Ask: Who would you join for the New Year? Why?

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning Stage A. Show Padlet. Show Ss an example of how to complete the task: categorize the sentences according to whether they describe Giacomo, Nicola, or Nestor’s plans for the New Year. Share the link in the chat and confirm that Ss can access it. Assign a slide to each Ss. Answers: Giacomo: They are renting a house. They are coming to stay. Nicola: She is having a party. Nestor: She is cooking dinner. They are going to the beach. They are meeting other people for a party. Ask CCQs: Is Giacomo’s family renting a house in the mountains? (Yes). Is Nicola having a small party? (No, she invited hundreds of people). What time are Nestor and his friends going to the beach? (Twelve o’clock). Stage B. Show G-Slides. Show Ss an example of how to complete the task: move the arrows to match the phrases in bold with the definitions. Share the link in the chat and confirm that Ss can access it. Assign a slide to each Ss. Answers: 1 D, 2 A, 3 E, 4 B, 5 F, 6 C. Ask: Which sentences refer to actions happening now or planned for the near future? (Now: 3, 4 / Future: 1, 2, 5, 6). Form: Show G-Slides. Show Ss an example of how to complete the task: change the verbs to the Present Continuous form. Then, complete fill in the auxiliaries in the second box. Share the link in the chat and confirm that Ss can access it. Assign a slide to each Ss. Answers: cook → is cooking, meet → are meeting, rent → are renting, come → are coming, go → are going, have → am having. Positive → Negative: aren’t. Question: Are. Short Answer: aren’t. Pronunciation: Show G-Slides. Tell Ss they will hear three questions. Show Ss an example of how to complete the task: move the arrows up/down to show the intonation pattern for each question. Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Show G-Slide. Tell Ss to choose three questions from the text box. Give Ss 2 minutes. Instruct Ss to ask their partner three questions (e.g. Are you going out for a meal tonight? Who are you going with?). Their partner should respond to the question (e.g. Yes, I’m going out for dinner with my family). Put Ss in pairs in BORs. Monitor Ss. After 5 minutes, switch partners. Write down examples of how the questions from the text box were used. OCFB on content and language.
