Description

In this lesson Ss are going to talk about our changing world(climate, population, polution etc.) – through encouraging students to think about their attitudes towards the environment. A video about man's impact on the world will be shown as a lead in. Next, they will be given a vocabulary exercise about disasters. Lastly, they are going to speak to choose only one person to rescue from disaster.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of vocabulary about disasters in the context of our changing world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of our changing world and disasters

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Timeline with picture from the past and present including drought,population etc. will be shown to set the context of our changing world. -They are going to work in pairs to guess the context of the lesson. -A video named "Man" will be shown to generate interest in the topic. -They are going to work in pairs and share their idea about the video.

Presentation (8-10 minutes) • To clarify meaning so learners understand it

-PowerPoint Presentation about disasters will be shown -The meaning of the word will be elicited -After the focus on meaning,I will drill the pronunciation so that learners know how to say it.

Practice-Controlled (8-10 minutes) • To provide controlled written practice focused on using the target language accurately.

-Students will be given a matching exercise(definition-disasters) to check if they have understood the meaning of the words. -They will be asked to check their answers with their partners. -Answer key will be given. -SS will be given a crossword exercise about disasters to check if they have learnt the spelling. -Answer key will be shown on the board.

Production-Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide freer oral practice and focused on using the target language more fluently

-Students will be given ecological dilemmas conversation questions(eg if you were dying of hunger, would you eat an endangered species? Why?) on colored paper(yellow,green,red) -They are going to throw the dice to decide the color. -They will get that paper, read the question and answer.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Students will be given fruit names to work in groups.(4 Ss in each group) -They will be given roles. -They are going to imagine they have survived a natural disaster and waiting for rescue. -Only 2 of them can be rescued. -They need to justify why he/she should be one of the rescued people. -They all need to agree on 2 Ss. -The rescued students will be asked to go another group and tell why their partners chose them.
