Materials

Abc An online website that allows you to use it as a whiteboard "if needed"
Abc Student Book

Main Aims

  • To teach students to use the present perfect with for and since to communicate and talk about things that went on for a while or things that they still do

Subsidiary Aims

  • to increase accuracy in speaking more fluently about the old habits or hobbies students do till this day

Procedure

warmer/lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To get students interested in talking about how long things have lasted

I will start the lesson by sharing a bit about myself i will say I am from Tehran. I have lived here for 19 years and i started playing the guitar many years ago i will write i live in Tehran and i play the guitar Then i will ask two or three students to share one thing about their life that is still true they might be a musician or they might play basketball I want them to think about things in their lives that began in the past and they still do those thing to this day

Highlighting (4-7 minutes) • To show students the new grammar so they can see how it is used

I'll point out the grammar we are learning today to get the students to notice it, then I'll go back to my sentences on the board. Next to (I live in Tehran) I will write (I have lived in Tehran for nineteen years). Next to (I play the guitar) I will write (I have played the guitar since I was fifteen years old) and I will ask the students to look at my new sentences. I will ask: What words do you see that talk about time? They will see (for nineteen years) and (since I was fifteen) I will ask them Which one (for or since) talks about how many years? Which one talks about when I started? This will help them understand better

Clarification (14-17 minutes) • To clearly explain the rules and meaning of the new grammar

I will start by drawing a timeline on the board showing the past and now on the timeline i will mark a point in the past (for example 2006) and draw a line that continues up to now i will explain that when we want to show the starting point on the timeline we use since (since 2006) then I will show the same line but focus on the length of the line the duration and explain that when we want to show how long the action has continued we use for ( for 19 years ) this way students can see visually that since connects to the starting point while for connects to the length of time.i will ask the students some ccqs like does this action still continue now or is it finished? Yes it still continues, or does it have a connection to the present? yes, can I say the exact time like yesterday or not? No after getting their answers I will explain that we use the present perfect for actions that started in the past and still continue then i will ask the students what do we have after the subject and point to have or has then I will ask what comes after have or has and point to the past participle I will write the formula on the board Sub + have or has + past participle then I will move on to for and since I will write two examples on the board (i have lived here for 19 years) and (I have lived here since 2006) I will ask I will write the formulas on the board for + period of time and since + point in time I will give a few more examples and ask students to make their own sentences using for and since I will also focus on pronunciation of have has and contractions like Ive or hes to help with natural speaking. we use how long to ask about the time something has continued from past till now we answer with (for) when we say the period of time like (for two years) and (since) when we say the starting point like (since 2006) for example i have lived in tehran for 19 years. have you lived in tehran for 19 years? yes/no or i have in tehran since 2006. have you lived in tehran since 2006? yes/no

controlled practice (9-12 minutes) • To check if students can use the grammar correctly in writing

students are going to do the grammar exercise 9B on page 143 they will write questions with how long and answer them using for and since they will work alone for 6 minutes then we will check the answers together

Free practice (10-15 minutes) • To let students use the grammar naturally in conversation

students will work in small groups of three or four people they will talk about their lives they must use the present perfect with for and since to talk about things they have done for a long time for example they can say i have played the guitar for five years or i have known my friend since i was 10 after that each group will choose one person to share an interesting thing they learned about someone i will listen to the groups and help with any mistakes after everyone has shared i will give feedback to the whole class if required
