Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Past Simple in the context of Holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The class will be started by a short talk about last weekend and the things I did then. After that I will ask my students to tell me about their weekend and the things they did.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will choose three of my students sentences and I will write them in the correct past simple form on the board.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a timeline on the board and I will ask my students some CCQs: Are the sentences about the past, present or future? (past). Are they finished? (Yes) Can I mention the time they happened? (Yes). I will elicit the form by asking my students about the role of the words and the changes that have been made to the verbs (regular & irregular forms). sub+verb (past simple. Regular verbs receive ed. Irregular verbs change completely. I will work on the pronunciation of the verbs that receive ed: played /d/. ask /t/. created /Id/. and also some irregular verbs like said.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are going to do a gap filling task on page 120 of the SB in 4 minutes individually. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then the answers will be checked with the WC.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students are going to be divided into groups of 3 or 4. They will have 8 minutes to talk about their best holiday ever. They will tell the class who they think in each group had the best holiday. They will be monitored and feedback will be given at the end if needed.
