Main Aims

  • To clarify the way we express the future through a listening activity so the ss will be able to talk about predictions concerning the Earth

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a clarification and practice of ways to express intention, plans and arrangements in the context of predictions

Procedure

Lead in/ Building context (4-6 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic of the listening

. project pictures that show historical buildings, nature distructions, and global warming . give the ss, in pairs, a few minutes to predict changes regarding the pictures in 20 years . get a WCFB by asking each pair to tell one prediction

Listening task (6-8 minutes) • To practice listening for gist, then specific to contextualize and introduce the target language

. provide a HO with the first question about the gist of the listening . listen to T 5.1 for gist, answer individually, and then have them check in pairs, WCFB . listen again for details, provide a HO of detailed questions . have them read the questions then listen again . project the answer key on the WB

Highlighting target language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that learners are focused on it

. give the ss the the grammar analysis to work on individually . have them finish each part separately,starting with meaning then form . FB by peer check . final FB by projecting the HO on the board and have 1 s from each pair come and answer on the board . do immediate error correction on the board

Clarifying target language (4-6 minutes) • To clarify meaning and pronunciation

. drill the pronunciation of 'may, might, will, going to'

Controlled practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide controlled practice

. individually circle the right answer . peer check . listen to T 5,3 for final feedback

Semi-controlled practice (6-8 minutes) • to provide students with a more challenging practice

. 'What do you think will happen?' exercise, ss have to ask each other some prediction and answer using 'may, might, will or be going to' . model with a stronger s how to ask and answer . set the ss in pairs . change pairs after a few minutes . final feedback as a WCFB . monitor while they practice for delayed error correction
