Main Aims

  • Reading for gist and detailing the context of news and weather.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To elicit vocabulary related to news and weather in the reading context.

Stage 1 • Warmer / Lead in to set lesson context and engage students

The teacher starts by using pictures about the context of the topic (News & Weather) relating the basic vocabularies about the topic and ask them to guess what the pictures represent. For example: 'What is that on the picture?' - Guessing continues.

Stage 2 • Pre-teach vocabulary

To teach them by high-lighting the vocabulary (s) on bold letters. For example: eliciting the bold letters on the text. That will stimulate their mind as they learn the meaning of the vocabularies.

Stage 3 • Gist Reading

To help Ss get a general idea about the text. Students should be in group if they are more than 10 and would read separately if they are 4 in the class. They are given questions to also help them focus.

Stage 4 (3-5 minutes) • Exposure for Reading Details

Teacher put the Ss in pairs. Ss are given instructions about the detailed reading activity. Ss read the text again and mark true (T) or false ( F) 1 Manchester is famous for football 2 It rains more in Manchester than in other cities. 3 It never snows in the winter. 4 It usually snows at the beginning of the year in Chicago. 5 It isn’t very hot. 6 You can hear jazz in Chicago’s park in the summer. Ss check the answer together & the whole class feedback. Ss go to board and write the answers. Peer correction if necessary.

Stage 5 (5 minutes) • Controlled Practice To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Pass out pictures and asks Ss to identify what they see with the following phrases. . cloudy . foggy . showery . stormy

Stage 6 • Post Reading To provide students with free practice of the target language.

Set students in pairs and ask them to write sentences about their favourite weather. To give students the opportunity to use the vocabularies learnt from the lesson to note a simple sentence . For example , " Cloud" . The cloud is white . " Windy " It is windy today. Before then, the pictures of the highlghted vocabularies must have been shown to the Ss the second time to help them get a reminder about the phrases.
