Description

In this lesson Ss will learn negative and questions form of Past Simple in the context of stormy weather. They will practice those forms during the activities. Ss will also improve their receptive skill: reading.

Main Aims

  • To revise the grammar of Past Simple and to teach the negative and question contructions in the context of stormy weather.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Provide the students with chance to read to understand the target language in context of stormy weather.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-I will show Ss the picture of weather forecast and I will pretend that I am a presenter so today Ss will learn how to present the weather. "It is a joke". I will say. -I will ask them: How is the weather today? How was the weather yesterday? -I want elicit from Ss word "weather" to set the lesson context and I will explain that today they will learn negative and questions contruction in Past Simple which they already know. -I will give Ss HO with sentences to complete with their opinions, using the type of word indicated in brackets. First I will give example. 1.I hate days. (weather adjective) 2.I love it when it's .(weather adjective) 3.In my country, the best weather is in . (place) 4.My favourite time of year is .(month) -Ss will work in pairs and then they can compare answers. I will ask randomly some Ss about their opinions. -I can ask also "why" they have that kind of answer.

Pre-Teaching (4-5 minutes) • To teach the blockers in the reading text.

-I will show Ss some pictures related to the weather or extreme situations. -I want elicit from the students words like: storm, lightning, unusual, extreme, exiting, terrifying, experience, equipment, metal, rubber. -To help Ss eleciting I will use some CCQs.

Exposure. Reading for details. (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a question for details.

-Before I will Ss the text I can ask some Ss about their free time activities and explain that also it means to have a day out. - I will give Ss the text to read for details after that Ss will answer questions True or False. 1. Alan knew a lot about storm chasing the first time. (F) (didn't know) 2. Alan went with his girlfriend Joanne. (F) (he went with his friend) 3. They went in the summer. (T) 4. Daniel lives in Spain. (F) He lives in France. 5. They chased the storm in a car.(T) 6. The car had lots of metal. (F) (it has lots of plastic and rubber) 7. Lightning hit the car three times. (T)

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students attention to the target language.

- I will ask Ss to underline all the questions starting from What, why, who, when, where, did, how. I will ask them to underline also asnwers for those questions. What is storm chasing? Why did you go storm chasing? Who did you go with? When did you go? And where? Did you have any special equipment? How did you feel?

Clarification (2-7 minutes) • To clarify the maening form and pronunciation of the target language.

-Past Simple, negative and questions -Form past simple question and negatives with the auxiliary verb "did" Did you have any special equipment? I didn't have any special equipment. Short answer: Yes, I did. (I/you/he/she/it/we/they) No, I didn't. With "Wh"-questions the order is Wh -question word + did + subject + verb. When did you go? Who did you go with?

Controlled Practice. (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice.

- I will give Ss activities from workbook and Students book for controlled practice. -Ss will work in pairs. - activity 1: students book, ex. 2, p. 85 Correct the questions. 1. Where did go you? (Where did you go?) 2. Who you go with? (Who did you go with?) 3. How did you travelled? (How did you travel?) 4. What did you there? (What did you do there?) Had you a good time? (Did you have a good time?) -activity 2 students book, ex. 7, p. 145 Change the sentence according to the symbol in brackets. example: I didn't answer the phone (?) Did you answer the phone? -activity 3. students book, ex. 7, p. 145 write questions for the answers about a holiday. example: Who did you go with? I went with my husband. -for this activity Ss will work in two groups. -activity 4 .workbook, ex. 5A, p. 46 put the words in the correct order to make questions ( a dialogue) example: you/did/Where/go? Where did you go?

Free Practice. (3-7 minutes) • To provide Ss with free practice of the target language.

- I will give Ss activity from students book p. 127 - Ss will look at the table (HO-prepared by teacher) and ask their partner questions about their day out. -They need to use questions like: Where did you go? How did you travel? Who did you go with? Did you have a good time? What did you do there?

Error-correction. (1-3 minutes) • Correct Ss mistakes.

- when Ss are doing their activity I will be monitoring them. I will collect a selection of their errors and then after the activity I will write a selection of the mistakes on the board and ask students to correct them.
