Procedure (27-37 minutes)
Students will be presented with pictures on Powerpoint slides and will be asked to guess the topic of today's lesson based on the pictures. Each student will get a chance to answer. Next, the teacher will present the topic of the lesson on the next slide (i.e., giving advice). Next, students will be verbally and orthographically presented with the question "What is the best advice you were ever given?" Each student will share an answer; teacher will write students' answers on the slides.
Two screenshots with the target texts will be shared in Zoom chat. Students will spend 2 minutes and will be asked to skim over the text for "gist or overall ideas." Teacher will then share a link to a kahoot activity in which students will answer two gist questions individually. Questions and answers: 1.Which words were mentioned in the text "How to avoid being struck by lightening? Circulation; Shelter; Thunder; Bandages [answers: shelter and thunder] 2.Which words were mentioned in the text "How to treat a broken leg"? Circulation; shelter; Thunder; Bandages [answers: circulation and bandages]
The text will be shared with students a second time, in which students will be asked to read the text again for 2 minutes, this time paying attention to details in the text. Next, a Google Form will be shared in which students will fill in the sentences' blanks with the appropriate words used in the text. Students will be asked to discuss the answers with their partner in BOR for 1 minute before submitting their answers individually. Teacher will then show students' responses on Google Forms and present the correct answers. Questions and answers: 1. Get the _______ person to lie flat on their back [injured] 2. Do not move the injured unless absolutely _________ [necessary] 3. No place is completely safe ______ lightening [from] 4. ...However, some places are safer _____ others [than] 5. Wait for the storm to pass. The lightening threat usually ______with time after the last sound of thunder. [reduces] Next, students will be presented with a clarification of the parts of speech of some challenging words that were used in the text. Words will be presented on the slide, along with the sentences in which they appeared in the text. Students will be asked to verbally identify the parts of speech of the bolded words. Each student will get an opportunity to provide an answer. Teacher will write the correct answers and clarify incorrect answers thereafter. Words selected and answers: Injured [adjective]– Do not move an injured leg Dangerous [adjective]– Some places are more dangerous than others Circulation [noun]– This may cut off circulation Bandages [noun]– Apply steady pressure to the area with sterile bandages Lightening [noun]– No place is completely safe from lightening Immediately [adverb]– Seek a safe location immediately Next, students will be asked to pronounce the same words presented on the previous slide in the context of the sentences they are used in and will be asked to indicate the stressed syllable in the target word. Students will be orthographically and verbally presented with the question "What is your best advice related to health, work, relationships, and others?" Teacher will share a padlet link and will ask students to discuss the answers for 4 minutes in BOR, then formulate their answers individually by writing them on padlet for 3 minutes. Students will read each others' advice in class for 3 minutes.
Based on students' mistakes during the speaking activity, written activities, and/or verbal responses; teacher will anonymously correct some of students' mistakes on the whiteboard.
