To clarify and practice present continuous for future arrangements in the context of New Year’s celebrations.

Procedure (37-49 minutes)
1. Slide 2. Elicit from learners about what they do on New Year in OC. What do people do on New Year’s Eve in your country? What traditions are there? For example: In Germany people set off fireworks. Put Ss answer ideas on WB. (Presentation through the text)
Have students listen to Language Focus 2 on page 36. While listening, the Ss will be listening for what is the main idea for each file. Direct them to Google Form. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ezpOIDHvDNb0LE9v5Td0Saj2Uk9OZtlKx_CNTQ1lx7c/edit The form contains a multiple choice on the audio. Listen to each text and then do the multiple choice question. Thirty seconds to complete each question. Then, after answering the questions for all three, go over each one individually in OCFB and using the Responces tab. Ask students for the answer to each question.
Direct Ss to Slide 3. Slide 3. Go over construction of the present continuous tense (for future plans.) Show timeline on Slide 4. Slide 5. CCQ “What verb do we use here?” → to be (am/is/are) “What happens to the main verb?” → We add –ing. “Is there a future word in the sentence?” → Yes, tomorrow.
Slide 6. Ask question: Which is correct. I study tomorrow night. I am studying tomorrow night. The second answer is correct. Why? When do you use the present continuous tense? Plan takes place in the future. Look at Slide 7. Explain that the present continuous tense is also used for what is happening now. Go over format. Same as the present continuous future tense. What is the difference? There isn't a future indicator. Slide 9. Which of these is present continuous tense for the future and which is for present continuous tense happening now? Slide 9. Go over pronunciation of contractions. Ask what each one is: Ex. I'm = I am. Slide 12. Explain to students that I have had students who tell me they understand English in class but have problems outside of class. That's because in English we speak quickly and link words in a sentence together. Explain how the "g" often disappears in spoken English and the "to" sound become more of a "tuh" sound. Show sentence on Slide 13. Ask students to write the sentence I say: She’s‿FLYin‿tuh‿PARis‿NEXT‿month. Show correct sentence. Have students check what they wrote against the correct sentence, Go over pronunciation. Show sentence on Slide 14. Ask students to write the sentence I say: They’re HAving DINner with us toNIGHT. Show correct sentence. Have students check what they wrote against the correct sentence. Show sentence on Slide 15. Ask students to write the sentence I say: We’re‿goin‿tuh‿the‿MOOVies‿tuhNIGHT. Show correct sentence. Have students check what they wrote against the correct sentence.

Afterwards the students go into breakout rooms and compare answers. Then they come back and we will go over in OCFB. Student answers what their partner had said.
Tomorrow is New Year's Eve! What are going to do to celebrate? Students use present continuous in their answers.
