Description

In this lesson, students practice in reading for details in the context of relationship. They will learn how to use also and because. Moreover, they will practice speaking for fluency during the lesson. As all activities will be done in pairs and groups, they will learn collaboratively. They will have to move to participate in activities so that students will be kinesthetically active.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about Juliet's best friend in the context of friendship
  • To provide process writing practice of a paragraph by learning how to use also and because in the context of friendship

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in the context of friendship

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Check the projector and materials to be ready. Ask Ss how they feel today. Ask Ss to stand up and hold the ribbon. Form the pairs then ask Ss to sit down. Project the slideshow and ask Ss to say what they see on the PPT. Elicit "best friend" Talk about your best friend. Tell Ss her name, age, job and marital status Ask Ss to learn about their partners' best friends.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show the photo of Juliet and Katie on the PPT Ask Ss to discuss what they see and what the relationship is between them with their partners. Tell Ss that before they read the text, you will teach some words. Ask Ss to discuss about the photos in pairs.. Teach vegetarian and journalist. Use the PPT Ask CCQs to check meaning. Vegetarian Does she like vegetables? (Yes) Does she eat meat or chicken? (No) Journalist Do you read the newspaper? Does a journalist work for the school? (no) Does a journalist work for the newspaper? (yes)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell Ss that they will read a text about Katie and Juiet Show Ss the exercise they will do after they read the text Pass out the HOs Give 5 mins to Ss to read and think about the exercise. Ask Ss to pick up a paper. Then form the groups according to the paper's colors. There will be three or four groups. Ask Ss to choose the correct answer and stick it on the A3 size sheet. Pass out the paper strips. Give 4 mins Ask Ss to check other groups' sheet and compare their answers to them Get FB by nominating Ss

Post-Reading/Listening (15-20 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask Ss to find and underline because, also, and, but in the text. Ask Ss to look at the example sentences on the PPT. Talk about them Then nominate some Ss to underline them on the board. Talk about those sentences on the board. Clarify when we use also and because Ask Ss to pick up one paper. Then form the groups. There will be only two groups. Ask Ss to pop the balloons. Then the sentences will come out and ss need to complete the sentences with and, but, because or also. Ask Ss to check the other group's answers. Check the answers by nominating Ss. Explain the answers if there is any wrong answer
