Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of functional phrases such as why don't we, let's go, shall we... in the context of everyday situations
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a speaking task where students suggest and agree in the context of plans
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about a conversation between a mother and her son in the context of buying shoes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will introduce the topic by saying that a friend wants to talk to his crush. Then, I will ask Ss "If one friend wants to talk to their crush, what suggestions can you give them?" Ss will share their answers in pairs. Then, I will ask some Ss to share their ideas with the class.

Text work (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will proceed to the next stage by showing them a WhatsApp conversation between two people. I will ask Ss to read and answer two questions: "What's the problem?" "What suggestions does the person give?" I will ask Ss to discuss in pairs. Then, I will elicit some answers for the whole class. I will write their answers on the board.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Once I have the TL written on the board, I will ask CCQs to students to emphasize the TL of the lesson: Are these suggestions or instructions? Is this a formal or informal conversation?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will use a guided discovery handout for Ss to work in pairs: FORM: Match the sentence with the corresponding rule. a) Let’s go to the cinema. Let’s + _______ (base verb) b) Why don’t we order pizza? Why don’t we + _______ (base verb) c) How about going for a walk? How about + _______ (verb + ___) d) Shall we meet at 7? Shall we + _______ (base verb) I will monitor Ss and ask CCQs "Which phrases use an -ing form? APPROPRIACY A. Match each situation with the most appropriate suggestion. 1. You’re with your best friend. A. Let’s go for coffee. 2. You’re talking to your teacher. B. Shall we meet after class? 3. You’re writing a formal email to a colleague. C. I suggest we review the report. B. Put each sentence in the corresponding category. 1. How about watching that movie? 2. Let’s go to the park! 3. You could try talking to the boss. It might be a good idea to rest. Why don't we eat out? FORMAL INFORMAL CCQs: Is this a formal sentence or formal question? Can you use this phrase with a friend? PRONUNCIATION: Choose if the following sentences have rising or falling intonation. 1. Let’s go to the park. 2. Why don’t we watch a movie? 3. How about going out? CCQs Is this a sentence or a question? After Ss finish, I will ask them to pair with another peer and compare answers. Then, I will give the correct answer for each part and explain the necessary areas of knowledge for this TL.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will work individually on a listening task. They will listen to a conversation between a mother and her son. They have to complete the sentences with the correct suggestion. They will listen the recording twice. I will ask them to check in pairs and then share the correct answers with the class.

Freer Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will prepare four different situations. These situations will be written on different strips of paper. I will hand out one strip for each student. Then, I will ask Ss to work in pairs. One student describes the situation they have so that the other student gives suggestions. They will go around the class and practice with as many peers as they can

OCFB (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback related to students' errors identified in the freer practice

I will select a couple of errors I picked from the freer practice. I will make sure to use different colors when I use the whiteboard
