Description

This is a grammar lesson on the topic of missing an important event, based on a phone conversation between a son who missed his flight and his mother. Students are first exposed to the target language in context, then guided to notice and clarify meaning, form and pronunciation. They practise the grammar through a wordwall task for the controlled practice and a freer speaking activity discussing possible alternative results regarding important events.

Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use the third conditional to talk about past regrets and hypothetical alternative outcomes.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking: to provide students with practice in speaking fluently in order to express hypothetical past events.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • to activate interest and introduce context of regrets/missed opportunities

The T shows one image of a kid coming late to school on an exam date and asks about the possible consequences. The T asks "have you ever missed anything important because of a mistake or bad luck?"

Exposure (listening) (5-6 minutes) • To provide natural context containing the target language throughout a recording.

The T plays a short audio of two people discussing a past event. Students answer gist questions: "What happened to the boy?", "How did the mum react to the situation?"

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to examples of the third conditional in context.

The teacher asks students "Why did he miss the flight?" and elicits answers such as "He woke up late", "He forgot to set the alarm" or "There was traffic". Then the T asks "So, what would have been different if he... and reformulates Ss' answers to form the 3rd conditional. Finally Ss will have to complete the prompts provided on the slide. -> If he had woken up early, ... -> If he had remembered to set the alarm, ... -> if the hadn't been traffic, ...

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To ensure students understand and can accurately use and pronounce the target language.

The teacher clarifies meaning, form and pronunciation of the 3rd conditional. - Elicit meaning through CCQs - Meaning: "Did he set the alarm?", "Did he catch the plane?" - Form: "How many parts does each sentence have?", "Which part has the word if?" - Pronunciation: would've /wʊd.əv/ and wouldn't have /wʊd.nt.əv/

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The T shares a wordwall link and Ss need to order jumbled sentences into the correct third conditionals. The T sets the time The T conducts feedback

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide fluency practice using the target language in a communicative context.

The T shows pictures of significant events such as the final football match in the worldcup 2022, the second world war and Will Smith's slap in the Oscar's ceremony. Ss then need to discuss alternative outcomes using the target language. The T provides a prompt to encourage Ss to use the target language.
