TP4 - Grammar (Hopes and wishes)
Upper-Intermediate (B2) level

Description

This is a grammar-focused lesson for Upper-Intermediate (B2) learners on the topic of wishes and hopes. Based on pages 64–65 of the Face2Face Upper-Intermediate Student’s Book (2nd Edition), the lesson introduces and practices the structures wish + past simple to express unreal or hypothetical present situations and hope + will/present simple to express real future desires. Learners encounter the language in short contextualized sentences, explore meaning, form, and pronunciation through guided discovery, and then practice it through controlled and communicative activities where they express their own wishes and hopes.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to understand and use wish and hope to talk about unreal present situations and real future possibilities, e.g. I wish I had more free time / I hope I’ll get a promotion.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Develop reading for gist and detail skills through short texts about daily life and future plans.
  • Practise speaking for fluency by sharing personal wishes and hopes.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Slide shows two questions (+ images of birthday & travel): – “What do you wish you could change right now?” – “What do you hope will happen this year?” Pairs discuss (2’). ICQs: Work in pairs? Yes. Speak or write? Speak. OCFB (1’): 1–2 shares.

Exposure (8-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

SB Ex 3a–b (adapted). Gist: “Are speakers talking about real possibilities or imaginary situations?” (individually 1–2’) → pair check → OCFB: hope = real future; wish = unreal present. Detail: Learners underline all wish/hope sentences in the text → pair check → brief OCFB.

Highlighting (2-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Slide shows two lines from text: – I wish I had more free time. – I hope I’ll travel more next year. Elicit contrast: Which is imaginary now? Which is possible future? (Hands up; 1–2 quick answers.)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning (guided discovery): Quick match (on slide or Form): sentence ↔ meaning. – I wish I had a car → “I don’t have one now.” – I hope I’ll get a car → “It’s possible in the future.” CCQs: “Is it true now?” (wish = No). “Is it possible in future?” (hope = Yes). Form (table on slide): – wish + past simple (present unreal): I wish I had… / I wish I were… – hope + will / present simple (future/real): I hope I’ll… / I hope it doesn’t… Pronunciation: Model + drill linking: /aɪ ˈwɪʃ aɪ həd/; /hoʊp aɪl/. Mark stress and contractions.

Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Controlled Practice (8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice SB Ex 5a (adapted) gap-fill: choose wish/hope + correct form. Demo 1 item on slide. Learners work individually (4’), pair check (2’), OCFB key (2’). Spot-drill any problem forms (e.g., wish + past, hope + will/present).

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Prompt slide (pair discussion using TL): “What do you wish you could change about your routine right now?” “What do you hope will happen next month?” ICQs: Use wish/hope? Yes. Speaking? Yes. Monitor for target accuracy; brief OCFB (1–2 shares).

Free Practice (8-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Task: Write three original sentences about your life (at least one with wish and one with hope), then share with partner; ask one follow-up question each. Model: I wish I lived nearer my family. / I hope I’ll pass my driving test this year. OCFB: Share nicest examples; DEC on slide (Good Language ✅ / To Improve ⚙️) with quick reformulations.
