Description

In this practice ande revise common collocations with the word day through a text-based framework. The lesson begins with a short discussion about routines, followed by a gist task where learners read and identify collocations in context. Meaning, form and pronunciation are clarified using Google slides. Students then complete controlled practice exercise from the coursebook (pg.37) on Google Forms and check answering open class. Finally, learners use the target language in a freer speaking task to personalise the collocation while interacting in breakput rooms. Feedback and delayed error correction close the lesson.

Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have practised and revised common collocations with the word day through a text-based framework, in order to improve their lexical range and accuracy when talking about dailt life and routines.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with listening and speaking practice for general understanding and fluency development while using the targe collocations in meaningful context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To get students talking about their daily routines and activate their previous knowledge of the topic.

1. Display the question on the screen "What do you do every day? Think about what you do every day and tell the class about your daily routine. T gives an example and Ss talk individually about their daily routines. 2. Today we will learn useful expressions with DAY and how to use them naturally. 3."What words or phrases do you know with the word DAY"? 4.Show google slides with the word "DAY'

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

5. Tell Ss: “You’re going to read a short conversation about daily routines.” 6. “Read quickly — what are the people talking about: work, family, or free time?” (Gist question). 7. Ss read individually (30 sec – 1 min). 8. OCFB: T asks a few answers (“They’re talking about routines/free time”). 9. Tell Ss "You're going to read a short conversation about daily routines. 10. T shows the dialogue with blanks in Google Docs. 11. T says: 'Look at the box. Choose the correct expressions with the word DAY to complete the dialogue. 12. Ss work individually to fill in the blanks. 13. T monitors and supports if necessary. 14. T shows the completed dialogue on the screen for feedback. 15. OCFB: T elicits the correct expressions and checks understanding briefly.

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

12. T Read the dialogue again and highlight the word DAY in yellow. 13. Ss read the dialogue and highlight the word DAY in all expressions. 14. T: "What word do these expressions have?"

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of the expressions with DAY by categorizing them according to time reference and use.

15 T: says " Now let's look at how we use these expressions." 16 T: says " Look at what these expressions mean". 17. T shows the the diagram on the screen SB pg37 18. Look at the diagram. It has four groups; the past, the future, how often/how long, and other. You have some phrases with the word DAY. Read the phrases and put each one in the correct group. 19. Example: the day before yesterday - it's about the past, so it goes here (point to 'the past'). 20.Ss Work individually (or in pairs) and put the other expressions in the correct category 21. OCFB; T check answers on the screen and confirms the correct groups. 22. Answer key:The past: the day before yesterday/the other day. The future: the day after tomorrow/one day. How often/how long: every day/all day/twice a day/six days a week. Other: a day off/ bad day/ have a good day. 23. T briefly elicits or checks meaning with CCQs. Examples - If I say "the day before yesterday" is in in the past or in the future? PAST If I say "the day after tomorrow", is it soon or later? FUTURE If I go to the gym twice a day, how many times? TWO If i say "a day off ", am I working that day? NO 24. T displays the target expressions on the screen/Google Docs 25. T elicits and highlights patterns: every + day, all + day, twice + a + day, six + days + a + week. 26. T writes or shows common mistakes and corrects them: every days/every day, all the day/all day, twice in a day/twice a day, day off/ a day off, pass a good day/ have a good day. 27. T checks understanding with quick Form CCQs: Do we write everyday as one word or every day as two? TWO After every, do we use singular or plural? SINGULAR - DAY In six days a week which word is plural? DAYS In twice a day, do we say a or in? A In a day off, do we need the article a? Yes 28.T models pronunciation of TL and marks stress: T says: "Now let's look at how we pronounce these expressions." T models: every DAY, a DAY off. have a good DAY, the DAY after toMORow.. Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

30. T "Now you're going to complete the sentences with the correct phrase from the box to make a phrase with DAY. 31. T shows the Google Form on the screen. 32. T reads one example aloud to model the task: "I saw your brother THE OTHER DAY. He told me you're studying in London now. 33.Ss complete the sentences indivdually in the Google Form. (5 min) 34. T monitors to ensure students are using English and discussing their choices. 36. T reads the answers on the screen. 37. T provides brief clarification if any confusion arises and praises correct use.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

38.Now you will work in pairs and ask each other some questions. Try to use as many DAY expressions as possible. When was the last time you had a day off? I had a day off the other day/I had a day off last Sunday Was yesterday a good day or a bad day? Why? I had a good day because I met a friend. I had a bad day beacuse I was tired.
