In this lesson, students are going to learn about skim reading and detail reading in the context of television.

Main Aims

  • Reading for gist and detailing the context of television theories.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students to speak about words and phrases about television theories.


Stage 1 • Warmer / Lead in To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher asks Ss to look at the pictures and ask if they can guess what do the pictures represent.

Stage 2 • Pre -Listening . To prepare students for the text and make it accessible to predict the topic.

Explain the meaning of some words stupid, fat,hurt, violence Write Television ................. on the board and asks SS to fill the blanks Television makes you happy because ......... Television makes you lazy because ........... Television makes you intellligent because ........

Stage 3 • While Reading- To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading.

Teacher puts the Ss in pairs and asks them to match the paragraph with the title in the reading. Then T puts the class into three groups and asks them to check their answer . Teacher projects the reading text onto the board and ask one student from each group to come to the board and match the paragraphs with the title . Each student writes one paragraph and gives the board marker to his/her friend until they finish the activity.

Stage 4 While /Detailed Reading • To provide students with more detailed challenging detailed , and inference reading.

Teacher shows an activity . In this activity Ss are expected to look at the chart and the text again and match each sentence to a television theory.. Students work individually and fnd the correct matching and then work in pairs and check their answers. Teacher shows the correct answer on the board. Ss check their work.

Stage 5 • Post Speaking To give S the opportunity to produce some a dialogue about watching television.

The teacher puts Ss in pairs and ask them to prepare a dialogue between two people watching television. Write a dialogue on the board. Rebecca : I am bored and I am fed up. Let's watch some TV.(Places herself on the comfortable part of the sofa . Waits Rebecca to sit down
