Procedure (36-46 minutes)
Compliment Chain The teacher asks the students to turn to the person sitting next to them and give a sincere compliment (e.g., I like your energy in class) After everyone gives and receives one compliment, the teacher thanks the class and transitions to the main lesson.
The teacher asks the students to go to mentimeter.com and answer this questions: What words come to your mind when you hear culture shock? Instruction: Scan the QR code and go to mentimeter.com. Then write your answers in the boxes and send them. You have 2 minutes ICQ: Which website will you go? What will you answer? How much time do you have?
The class plays a short Blooket quiz game where students try to guess the countries of different cultural traditions. Instruction: Now let's play Blooket to guess the countries of some different traditions. Scan the QR code. Read the tradition and match it with its country. ICQ: Are you going to match the tradition with its country? Yes or no?
The teacher teaches six blocking words from the text ( insight, approach, supplement, at the heart of, with authority, integral) through elicitation and CCQs. Instruction: Now, before reading, let’s look at some important words from the text. You will see six new words on the screen. First, try to guess their meanings from the sentences and then I will teach you their meanings.
The sts skim the text called CultureMee and choose the best main idea on Canva Presentation. Instruction: You’re going to read a short text about an app called CultureMee. Don’t worry about every word, just read the text quickly and find out what the text is mainly about. You have 3 minutes. ICQ: What are you going to read? What are you going to find? Main idea or details? How much time do you have?
The sts read the same text and complete True/False activity on the book. Instruction: Good! Now that you know what the text is about, let’s read again to find more details. Read these sentences first, then read the text and choose true or false for each sentence according to the text. If the sentence is false, try to find the true sentences from the text. You have 8 minutes to read the text and complete the activity. When you finish the activity, compare your answers with your partners. ICQ: What are you going to read first? Sentences or the text? What are you going to find for the false sentences? How much time do you have? What are you going to do when you finish the activity?
Instruction: You’ve just read about an app called CultureMee that helps travelers understand different cultures. Now, you’ll design your own app to help people avoid culture shock.Work in groups of 4-5. You have 10 minutes to design your app. Think about these questions: • What is your app’s name? • What does it do? • Who is it for? (Tourists, students, businesspeople, etc.) • What special features does it have? (Videos, tips, quizzes, maps, etc.) • What is your slogan? After you design your applications, scan the QR code and share your idea on Padlet. We will choose the most creative idea. ICQ: What are you going to design? How much time do you have? What are we going to do at the end of the activity?
The teacher gives delayed feedback on the pronunciation mistakes of the students at the end of the lesson. For the exit ticket, the teacher asks the students to share one thing they have learned today with their pairs.
