Description

In this lesson students learn about jobs and occupations throught the guided discovery based on vocabulary exercises and an oral comprehension listening exercice. We start the lesson with some pre-teaching vocabulary exercices (matching words to definitions+using new words in the sentence). The vocabulary part is followed by the listening ex. called ''His job/Her job'' about 2 different people and their professions.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a listening exercice about professions

  • To introduce and practice vocabulary that appear in the listening text.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T starts the lesson with a couple of discussion questions about professions.

Pre-Reading/Listening (9-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the loral comprehension part and make it accessible

The vocabulary exercise introduces the vocabulary bank related to professions. Flashcards appear on boards, students are expected to guess the name of the job by reading a short definition on the card. The second part of the vocabulary section consists of a fill in the gaps exercise where students are supposed to find the suitable word to fill in the gaps.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

While listening students are asked to choose the questions that 3 people ask Alex about his job and Alex's answers on them. Teacher nominates some students to formulate the questions. While listening to the second part students are asked to do the same Sue.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students listen to the 3rd part to guess the jobs of Alex and Sue. Teacher stops the listening 2 times to let students think and guess the name of the job.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the listening and expand on what they've learned

In this section students are suggested to use all the vocabulary, revise the grammar of the module and play the game ''Guess the job''. Students can use model questions from the listening part. Teacher nominates a student and invites him/her to the board, gives him a card with the name of the job. Other students have to guess the name of the job by asking questions.
