Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I am going to put on a straw beach hat and sunglasses and be sipping from a martini glass, (filled with water), while the Madonna song "Holiday" plays in the background and ask students, What are we talking about today? Jobs and Work. No! Today we're studying words related to holidays. So, a holiday is when you work. No. A holiday is when you go to school? No. Are holidays fun? Yes. Is holiday a British or American word? Yes. What is the word in American English? Vacation. Slides 3,4,5,6 Give students the URL for the Google Presentation and direct them to the photo of a crowded beach.Then ask: "What is this a photo of?" Ask: What can you see? Ask: Is a crowded beach a positive or negative part of a holiday? Then show them the next slide with a smiley face (positive) and an unsmiling face (negative.) Show students the next photo. "What can you see?" "What is this a photo of?" Is this beach a positive or negative part of a holiday? Show them the next photo. "What can you see?" "What is this a photo of?" Is waiting in an airport/train/bus station a positive or negative part of a holiday?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Slides 3, 4, 5, 6 Show students the image of a postcard and then an image of a brochure. Go to next slide and ask students what is number 1. a postcard or a brochure? Answer: Postcard. So, number two is a... (Have students say brochure.) Is the language in a postcard different from a brochure? Yes. A postcard is more personal. What does a postcard tell you? What does a travel brochure tell you? After the three minutes go over each item in the Response section of Google Presentations with students giving the answer.

Highlighting (6-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Slide 12 -- This next step is going over the vocabulary words in the lesson. Tell students they will do a task about holidays. They will have two minutes. After the two minutes I will call on students to give me the correct answers. Go over task in open class.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: Slide 12 -- Using CCQ ask students what each word means. Ask students what part of speech each word is. Pronunciation: Slide 18. Have students tell me which word goes in which box. Have Ss repeat the words after me, chorally and individually. If students are having trouble with luxurious have them look at slide 24. Form: Slide 25. Luxurious / Luxury / Luxury -- Have a student read the sentence. Ask another student for the answer. Ask which part of speech is the word. Slide 26. Crowded / Crowd -- Have a student read the sentence. Ask another student for the answer. Ask which part of speech is the word. Queue / Queuing -- Have a student read the sentence. Ask another student for the answer. Ask which part of speech is the word. Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give students the URL for the Fill in the Blank task with the four new lexis words from this week and two from last week. Give students 3 minutes to work on the task. Have students in pairs go over their answers. Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Slide 28 -- Students will discuss a holiday they took that was really good or really bad. Try to use some of the words you learned today Put two students in each breakout room and have them discuss for four minutes. Whey they are back ask one of the members of one of the groups to tell the class what the other member did on holiday that was either good or bad. Do DEC.
