Main Aims

  • To present and practice Past Simple yes/no questions through the context of the founders of Google.

Subsidiary Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To activate students’ prior knowledge and introduce the topic.

Show a photo of Larry Page and Sergey Brin (from p.48). Ask the class: Do you know these people? ... Larry Page and Sergey Brin the founders of the google search engine What do you use Google for? (answers may vary depending the Ss) When did you last use Google? (answers may vary depending the Ss) Have students discuss in pairs for 2 minutes. Conduct brief open-class feedback.

Presentation through Context (Listening for Gist) (8-10 minutes) • To introduce the target language (Past Simple yes/no questions) in a meaningful, contextualized way and allow students to identify key people, places, and things from the listening.

Tell students they are going to listen to a short interview from a radio program called “Book of the Day.” Explain that the writer, Wes Clark, is talking about his book about Google’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Show students the list of people, places, and things from the exercise: Michigan State University Russia Sergey’s mother Sergey’s father Larry’s parents Maryland University Wes Clark’s new book Explain: “You’ll listen to the interview once. Your task is to put these people, places, and things in the order you hear them.” “Don’t worry about understanding everything — just focus on the order.” Play the recording (Track 18) once. Students write the order individually. Ask students to compare their answers with a partner in breakout rooms (1-2 min) Check as a class and confirm answers. - use the transcript Answer Key: 1. Larry’s parents After checking answers, tell students: “Now that you know the general story, we’ll look more closely at how the presenter and Wes Clark ask and answer questions about the past — that’s our grammar focus today: Past Simple Yes/No questions.”

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form, and pronunciation of Past Simple Yes/No questions.

Meaning Elicit from the text: Did you really write this book in twelve weeks? Did Sergey’s parents find work in the USA? Did Larry study mathematics? Ask CCQs: Are these questions about the past? → Yes Did the action already finish? → Yes Do we use do/does for these questions? → No Which auxiliary verb do we use? → Did Can I say “Did you went to school?” → No (why? because did already shows past) Add the timeline to clarify that the questions refer to completed past actions. Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide guided practice using the correct form of Past Simple yes/no questions.

Use Ex. 9a (p.49) — Ss form questions from prompts. Example prompt: 1994 / Sergey and Larry / meet → Did Sergey and Larry meet in 1994? Give Ss time to form the questions and the compare with a partner /group they / at first / each other / Did / like ? → Did they like each other at first? Sergey / Did / Maryland University / go to ? → Did Sergey go to Maryland University? Larry's parents / teach / mathematics / Did ? → Did Larry's parents teach mathematics? study / Sergey / Did / computer science ? → Did Sergey study computer science? launch / Google / in 1999 / Sergey and Larry / Did ? → Did Sergey and Larry launch Google in 1999? Students work individually to form questions. Compare answers in pairs. Play the audio once to check answers.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To encourage communicative use of Past Simple yes/no questions in a personalized context.

Use and adapt Ex. 10 and 11a–b (p.49). Ss write 5 yes/no questions using verbs from the prompts (e.g., go / play / watch / read). (3-4 min) shopping last weekend? → Did you go shopping last weekend? a good book last month? → Did you read a good book last month? sport on TV last weekend? → Did you watch sport on TV last weekend? a concert last month? → Did you go to a concert last month? tennis or football last week? → Did you play tennis or football last week? a DVD last weekend? → Did you watch a DVD last weekend? the cinema last week? → Did you go to the cinema last week? dinner at home last night? → Did you have dinner at home last night? Pair practice – students ask and answer each other’s questions.(4-5 min) Encourage short answers: Yes, I did / No, I didn’t, followed by one more detail. Did you go to the cinema last week? Yes, I did. I saw a new Marvel movie. Students share two interesting facts about their partners with the class.

Extra Time Activity - Tech Time Travel (5-8 minutes) • To extend freer practice and promote fluency through discussion related to technology and the past.

Tell students: “Now let’s travel back in time — before Google!” Display discussion prompts: Did people use Google 30 years ago? Did your parents have a computer when they were young? Did you have a smartphone when you were 10? Did you use the internet at school? Did your family watch movies online in the past? Students work in groups of 3–4 (or breakout rooms). Encourage follow-up questions: When did you first use a computer? Why didn’t your family use the internet? OCFB
