Second Conditional
b1 level

Description

In this listen students are going to learn about second conditional in the context of animals and insects through PPP method. After this lesson students might better be able to use second conditional sentences to talk about imaginary situations in the present or future. The lesson will be finished with a discussion task about what they would do in different situations.

Materials

Abc American English File 2 Student's Book
Abc Board

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the second conditional in the context of encounters with wild animals.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of wild animals.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage I will tell students what I would do if I met a wild animal. I will use some second conditional sentences to provide a context for the grammar point. (If I saw a bear, I would climb the nearest tree!)

Exposure (4-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In this stage I will ask my students to tell the class what they would to if they ever met a wild animal.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

In this stage I will write some of the sentences that my students have said on the board (in the correct form) to draw their attention to the target language

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In this stage I will clarify the meaning by giving examples on the board and asking some CCQs (Are these situations real or imaginary? Imaginary - Do they talk about the past, present, or future? Present/Future - Can they really happen? No). After that I will elicit the structure from the students to clarify how to form the sentences (If + past simple, would + base verb). The form and contractions will be highlighted. The pronunciation of the contracted forms and the weak sound of “would” will be practiced in class.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are going to do exercise A on page 143 in the grammar bank in 4 minutes. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then we will check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this stage I will ask my students to talk in groups of four about what they would do in different situations with wild animals (for example, if they saw a bear or a shark). Then each group will share their most interesting or funniest idea with the class.
