Description

In this lesson, students will practice reading for gist and specific information in the context of an article about a rock band. Vocabulary related to free time activities will be reviewed. After the detailed practice, students will correct the false sentences in feedback as a speaking practice.

Procedure

Lead in: (5 minutes) • To set a context and engage students.

. Ss play a game to brainstorm words related to free time,e.g, watch TV, or DVD, play tennis, go shopping . Get Ss to stand up and be in a circle. . Ss throw the ball to each other saying something they do when they don't study. . Elicit that these activities are free time ones.

Pre-teach vocabulary (10 minutes) • To introduce the vocabulary that students may need when they read

.Ss work in pairs to match the phrases to pictures 1-8 in activity 1a. . Monitor to check that they work in pairs and give help when necessary. . Give feedback. .

Reading for gist (7 minutes) • To get students to skim the article to find three activities done in free time

.Ss look at the web page on page 33. .Give instructions that students will look only for three activities Ruby and Phil do in their free time. . Get Ss to underline 'three things' and 'free time' to make it clear to them that they need only to look for these three things. .Ss work in pairs. . Give feedback

Reading for specific information (15 minutes) • To get students to scan the article to answer questions

.Set the task by telling students that this time they are going to read to see whether the sentences in 4a are true or false. . Get students to read the sentences 1-8 before they read. .Ss work in pairs to check each other's work when they finish. . Give feedback.

Free practice (8 minutes) • To get students correct the false sentences as a speaking activity.

.Ss correct the false sentences orally. .Give feedback on content and language.
