Description

A lexis lesson introducing and practicing synonym formation (adjective → noun) in the context of global tipping customs, developing learners’ vocabulary range and fluency when discussing cultural habits around tipping.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to understand and use noun forms of adjectives (synonym formation, e.g. generous → generosity, polite → politeness) in the context of discussing tipping customs around the world.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide reading practice using a text about tipping culture in the context of travel
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a by expressing personal views and cultural comparisons about tipping habits.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To introduce the topic and activate learners’ prior knowledge.

T displays slide with questions and image of people tipping in restaurants. “Do people tip in your country?” “How much is normal?” T: “Talk in pairs for two minutes.” ICQs: “Work in pairs?” (Yes) “How long?” (Two minutes). S–S: Discuss → OCFB: Share one or two examples.

Exposure (8-8 minutes) • To expose learners to the target language in context.

T: “Read the text about tipping customs around the world.” Task: “Choose the best title for the text.” (adapted from Ex. 2a) S: Read individually → pair-check → OCFB: confirm gist. Then: “Underline 4–5 adjectives that describe attitudes to tipping.” (e.g. generous, polite, helpful). S: Identify → T: elicits to board. ICQs: “Read for details or general idea first?” (General idea.) “Underline adjectives?” (Yes.)

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw learners’ attention to the target lexical pattern (synonym formation).

T: “Look at the adjectives you underlined. How can we make them into nouns?” T: Models one example: generous → generosity. S–S: Discuss and guess other patterns. T: Boards adjectives and partial noun forms for discovery (polite → politeness, friendly → friendliness). ICQs: “Are we changing meaning or part of speech?” (Part of speech.)

Clarification (8-8 minutes) • To clarify meaning, form, and pronunciation of the target items.

Meaning (Guided Discovery): T: “Match the adjectives to their noun forms.” (Google Form https://forms.gle/VSsDnbcgLRs4uM7K9). S: Work individually → pair-check → T confirms. CCQs: “If someone is generous, do they give a lot or a little?” (A lot.) “Generosity — is it a person or a quality?” (A quality.) Form: T: Shows suffix patterns on slide: -y → -iness (friendly → friendliness) -ous → -osity (generous → generosity) -ful → -ness (helpful → helpfulness) -t(e) → -ness (polite → politeness) T: Highlights stress shifts and patterns. Pronunciation: T: Models and drills each noun: geNERosity, poLITEness, FRIENDliness, HELPfulness.

Controlled Practice (7-7 minutes) • To reinforce recognition and correct use of new noun forms.

T: “Complete the sentences using the correct noun form.” (adapted from WB p. 43). https://forms.gle/nM5zabb9dNTugEWh7 Example: “Generosity is important when you are travelling.” S: Work individually (3–4 mins) → pair-check. Semi-Controlled Practice (7-7 minutes) • To give structured oral practice using the new lexis.

T: “Discuss these questions in pairs using the new nouns.” “Is tipping in your country a sign of generosity or politeness?” “Do people expect helpfulness from waiters?” Demo Slide: Example exchange A: In my country, tipping shows generosity.
