Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of be going to in the context of plans and predictions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of plans and predictions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I am going to study hard tonight because I have an exam tomorrow. Because I studied hard, I am going to pass the exam. I am going to study math because I have a math exam tomorrow.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask my students what they think the story is here.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will highlight "going to" in red.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I am going to study hard tonight. Do I have a plan for tonight? Yes. What is my plan? Studying. When I want to talk about my plans or intentions, I use "going to" when I am sure that I am going to do that. What is the negative form? What is the question form? Can you change the subject form from I to he and rewrite this sentence? Going to doesn't change. Summer is coming, so it is going to be hot. Is this a plan? No, it is a prediction. We also use going to for predictions in which we can see or we know that something is going to happen.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

They will do the exercises in the book.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Tell me about your plans for the upcoming five years. And what are you doing right now to achieve those goals?
