Hypothetical
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, the students will learn hypothetical conditional through text. Students will contrast and compare real conditional vs hypothetical conditional to gain clarity

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of hypothetical conditional in the context of psychological experiments "What would you do if..."

Subsidiary Aims

  • to learn to recognize conditional sentences in a text, practice pronouncing conditional sentences, practice answering conditional questions using the words from the text

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will present the students with the questions from the text "The People Watchers" and ask them to answer the hypothetical questions: "What would you do if..." It will create anticipation and hopefully they will see the pattern- they use "If noun +verb in the past+ noun +would..." The answers will come from their personal experiences and will make the material relevant.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask the students to skim the text "Pick of the Month". Prior to the reading I will ask the students to answer the question of "What does the reviewer like the program?" It will ensure that the students read the text looking for specific information. They will not try to look up the meaning of the words they do not understand. I will ask the students to share their answers with each other, creating a comfortable environment to practice speaking. The student will then identify conditional sentences in the text to understand the pattern: If+noun+past tense verb+would.....?"

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will ask the students to identify hypothetical sentences in two texts. I will ask the students to use multiple choices to start identifying the patterns hat past tense is used in hypothetical sentences.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Form- I will write the grammatical rules on forming real and hypothetical conditional. Meaning- I will ask the students to explain the difference in meaning in "If I work I will be rich." vs "If I worked I would be rich" to highlight that we use past tense if something seems unrealistic/hypothetical to the speaker. Pronunciation- I will play the pronunciation of a British English speaker of several hypothetical sentences. I will ask the students to repeat the pronunciation drawing their attention to the stress words.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students will use google slides to complete the sentences: "I would... my autobiography if I didn't have to work so much", "If you .....see/saw/ your friend shoplifting you would call/called the police." The students will compare answers in pairs first then share their rationale with the class

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will go over several questions and answers using hypothetical conditional.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will provide questions and illustrations to inspire the answers so the students can use hypothetical conditional as they apply to their personal experience. Students will talk about themselves in hypothetical situations. They will use the grammar rules we studied this lesson and the words such as "jump a queue" that we studies in the prior 2 lessons.
