Description

In this lesson students are going to learn how to use have to, must, must not for rules and obligations and don't have to for when there is no obligation in the context comparing the rules in class and home. The lesson starts with a discussion about the rules students follow in these two places. It is followed by activities where they compare school and home rules and talk about what they have to or mustn’t do, focusing on expressing obligation and prohibition accurately.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The class will be started by a talk about my house rules, and class rules. It will be followed by asking students to tell the class about their own rules in these two places

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will choose 5 of my students sentences to write in the form on the board to draw their attention to the words that I have used differently.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language I will draw a concept table on the board with three columns, word, meaning and example and ask the students some CCQs to check understanding: (have to / must) Do I have a choice? no (have to / must) Is it necessary?Yes (don’t have to) Is it not necessary?Yes. I will elicit the structure from the students by asking about the role of the words and the way I have changed the verbs. sub + verb (obligation). I will let them know about the fact that we can not contract have and has in have/has to. . The students will be informed about the correct pronunciations of them.

Controlled Practice (2-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are going to do gap filling task on page 139 in the grammar bank in 2 minutes individually. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then we will check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students are going to be divided into groups of 3 or 4. They will have 8 minutes to talk about the most efficent rules in their home. at the end, they are going to tell the class who in the group they think had the rule. They will be monitored and feedback will be given at the end if needed.
