Description

In this lesson, students learn about past simple in context of telling about their holidays. The L starts with the discussion of important things on holiday. Then a listening activity is done to give context for grammar. After it we have a detailed look at MFP of past simple. With controlled practice.

Main Aims

  • To enable Ss to better understand and use Past Simple to tell about their past in the context of travel experiences, e.g. I was in Turkey, I lost my wallet there.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about lost things in the context of travelling

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

'Today we will talk about travelling. What are the most important things to have when you're travelling?' Elicit answers:passport, tickets, money, phone.(Use realia for help). Ask 'what's the worst thing to lose?' S answers 'Why?'

Initial Listening Task (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Introduce the character Marta. 'She lost something on her trip. What could it be?' Elicit an answer. Set the task: 'You need to hear 2 things. What did she lose? Did she find it?' Play the audio. Elicit an answer.

Detailed Listening Task (5-8 minutes) • To listen more thouroghly

'Look at the Qs. Do you remember any answers?' Give time to read Qs. Elicit prediction. 'Now listen again and find the answers.' Give feedback.

Highlighting (3-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

"I was in Ireland at the time because I had a job in Dublin. ... when I needed to show my boarding pass and my ID, I couldn't find my ID card. ... I didn't have any ID. " Put the sentences on the board. Check understanding. Concept Questions Is the action in the past? (Yes) Is the action finished? (Yes) Is there any connection with the present? (No) . Do we know when it happened? (Yes, usually) Draw a timeline.

Form Clarification (4-6 minutes) • To clarify the form of the target language

'What verb form do you need to make past simple?' Elicit 2nd or -ed Write on the board '+ S + V2/-ed' 'How to make a negative past simple sentence?' Elicit didn't/did not Write on the board '-- S + didn't + ____' 'What verb form do you need?'' 1st Add to the board 'How to make a question?' Elicit did 'Where?' In the beginning Write on the board '? what/where/etc. + did + s + V1'

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

'Put the verbs in past simple.' Do task Grammar Pt2 1.1 and 1.2

Pronunciation Clarification (3-6 minutes) • To clarify the pronunciation of the target language

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Personalise the topic. Ask if a S lost anything on his trips? To help Sts tell their story, write the following questions on the board: 1 WHERE WERE YOU AND WHO WERE YOU WITH? 2 WHAT HAPPENED? 3 WHAT DID YOU DO NEXT? 4 HOW DID IT END? If S haven't lost anything ask about their best trip.
