D-306 LESSON PLAN
Elementary level

Description

This 45-minute A2 lesson helps students learn how to make and respond to suggestions using “How about…?” and “Why don’t we…?”. The lesson begins with an Emoji Flip warm-up, followed by a listening task on making plans. Students then analyze the target language, and work in pairs to complete and act out short conversations using the new structures. The lesson is communicative, interactive, and leads students from guided discovery to confident speaking practice.

Main Aims

  • Students will be able to make and respond to suggestions using How about… and Why don’t we… in social contexts.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To improve listening for gist and detail about TV programmes and weekend activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Personalize topic & raise interest

T asks: “Imagine we finish class early — what should we do together?” T shows five activity options on screen: eat out, watch a movie, have coffee, play volleyball, go to karaoke. Ss vote by standing up or via ahaslides T announces the most popular option and asks: “So how can we suggest this in English?” → Elicit: How about… / Why don’t we…

Speaking Warm-up (Movement) (5-6 minutes) • To encourage fluency and contextualise listening topic

T places three signs on the walls: “I love watching TV”, “Sometimes”, “Never.” Ss move to the wall that matches them. In small groups, Ss ask each other: “How often do you watch TV?” “Do you have a favourite programme?” “Who do you watch it with?” ICQs: “Do you move or stay seated?” (Move).

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To introduce context and pre-teach key vocabulary

T displays a picture of two women with a magazine. T asks prediction questions: “What are they talking about?” “Do you like cooking shows?” “What’s your favourite programme?” T pre-teaches restaurant, programme, cooking, invite with visuals.

While-Listening 1 (3-3 minutes) • To get general understanding

T plays audio Part 1. Task: “Do they all like the same programme?” Ss listen once, compare answers in pairs, then share with class. Feedback: Yes, they do.

While-listening 1 (Detail) (4 minutes) • To listen for specific information

T plays again. Ss mark sentences True/False: 1. The programme Annie wants to watch is Best Cook. 2. Martina and Dan don’t see this programme often. 3. Annie loves everything to do with eating. Pair check → class feedback with board correction.

While-listening 2 (Gist) (3-4 minutes) • To get general understanding

T plays audio Part 2 or they watch it. Task: “What do they plan to do?” Ss listen once, compare answers in pairs, then share with the class.

While-listening 2 (detail) (5-6 minutes) • To listen for specific information

T plays again. S answer the questions. 1. Which day does Martina work late? 2. Which day do they decide to go out? 3. Who does Dan want to ask to dinner? 4. How does Annie feel about Dan's idea? They answer the questions individually and check each other's answers.

Language Focus (6-7 minutes) • To clarify meaning, form, and pronunciation of suggestion structures

T writes two sentences from the audio on the board: -Why don’t we try the new restaurant near my office?” -How about next Wednesday?” T asks simple questions: “Is it a suggestion or an order?” → Suggestion “Which one has -ing?” → How about T writes: ✅ Why don’t we + verb ✅ How about + verb-ing or noun/time expression.

Post-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To provide a communicative, personalised task where students use the target language from the listenin

Ss work in pairs to plan their weekend. They use at least two Why don’t we… and two How about… sentences. Example on board: A: “Why don’t we go to the cinema?” B: “Sorry, I can’t. How about Sunday?” A: “Good idea!” Ss write short dialogues on Padlet for feedback.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To share ideas and close the lesson

T asks groups to share their favourite plan. Class votes for the funniest or most realistic one.
