Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and specific information listening practice using a text about cheating and referees in the context of sport

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of cheating in sport

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Show the picture of a referee and try to elicit the word "referee" from the students. Drill the word and ask CCQs to make sure all ss understand the meaning of the word. Ask the ss are referees well-paid, respected, unpopular etc. in their country. Ask for more adjectives to describe referees.

Pre-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Put ss into pairs and show them the question on the board (Why do you think somebody would want to become a referee?) and tell them to talk about it in pairs. Change pairs if necessary

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with detailed information listening tasks

-Tell the ss that they are going to listen to an interview. Try to elicit the topic of the interview from the students (interview with an ex-Champions-League football referee from Spain) Give HO to students and tell them to look at the questions and try to find answers for those questions while they are listening. -Put ss in pairs and tell them to compare their answers. Then give ss HO2 which includes questions and options for answers. Tell ss to look at the questions and options and play the audio again. Show questions on the board and give FB

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with specific information listening tasks about cheating in football

-Give ss the HO. Tell them to read it and then play the audio. Ss listen and fill in the gaps in the HO with 1 to 3 words. When they have finished tell them to check their answers with their partners. If ss have difficulty understanding or finding the words, show the possible answers and tell them to listen again and fill in each gap with the appropriate word or phrase given. Tell them to check their answers in pairs. Give FB on the board.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Put students into pairs. Give them the HO about sport, referees and cheating. Tell them to discuss in pairs. If any pair finishes early tell them to change HO and ask questions again.
