Description

In this lesson, students learn about the (used to) through guided discovery based on a reading text about the some famous people .The lesson starts with discussion about what the famous faces did and liked in their schools as a student. This is followed by jigsaw reading where students read and relate stories about what they became at the end. Finally there is some controlled practice through sentence reformulation and free practice via a final role-play speaking activity.

Procedure

Lead_in (2 minutes) • Get learners interested and activate background knowledge before reading.

- Short discussion, image, or question to connect to the reading topic. - Keeps focus on meaning before form.

Gist Reading (3 minutes) • Understand the main idea of the text without worrying about grammar.

Quick task (e.g. asking a relative question) Reduces pressure and keeps reading natural.

Detailed reading for context (3 minutes) • Understand key points and prepare for grammar noticing.

Task could be true/false, comprehension questions, or finding details.

Noticing stages (2 minutes) • Draw attention to the grammar item in a real context.

-Provide a short extract from the text where the form appears. - Learners highlight or underline examples of the target structure. - Encourage peer discussion about patterns before confirming.

Concept Checking & Rule Building (2 minutes) • Help learners deduce meaning, form, and pronunciation.

Ask guided questions ("Is it talking about the past or now?" "Is the action finished?"). - Elicit the structure onto the board. - Check understanding with concept checking questions (CCQs).

Clarification • Confirm correct use, form, and pronunciation.

Boardwork with timelines, substitution tables, or color coding. - Correct any misconceptions noticed during elicitation.

Controlled Practice • Accurate use of the form in a safe, structured activity.

Gap-fills, matching, transformations, or sentence completion.

Freer / Semi-Controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • Move towards meaningful use in context.

-Sentence writing about the reading text theme. - Short pairwork speaking where they must use the target form.

Feedback & Error Correction • Consolidate learning and fix key issues.

-Content feedback first, then language feedback. - Reinforce correct patterns from learner output.
