simple past
beginner level
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification of simple past in the context of past actions
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of past actions
Procedure (37-49 minutes)
First, I talk about the things that I did in the past, but not anymore. For example, I went to university. I threw a birthday party last year. My grandfather was a doctor.
I ask them to think about something true in the past, but not anymore.
I will write some of the sentences that the students mentioned in the correct grammar on the board.
I will write a sentence on the board, for example, You stayed at a hotel. And ask these CCQs: What is the role of the first word? subject. What about the second word? Verb. Then I will draw a timeline on the board and ask: Does it happen in the past, present, or future? Past. The verb (stay) is the base form, but when we add (ed) at the end, it becomes the past form. Then I will ask them to change the subject from you to them and rewrite the sentence. Then the past form of the verb doesn't change. What is the negative form? What is the question form? We use the simple past for things that happened once or many times in the past, but they are no longer the case.
Excersises from the book.
i will ask them to tell me about the best vacation that they had.
