Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about life stages

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of personal life changes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

. Pre-teach vocabulary by playing taboo, I write the first half for the first group on the left side of the WB (middle-aged, pensioner, admirer, sherry). Write the second half for the second group (confess, teenager, invent, recipe) . . For FB, they match with pictures on the WB . Show a picture of Maria surrounded by pictures of her life . Introduce her name and nationality . Regarding the new vocabs, the WC matches them with the pictures and I write each next to its picture

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

. In pairs predict how was her life . Change the pairs and have them share what they predicted . Tell them that it's her birthday, then show a slide with the following questions to speak in pairs; - How old do you think she is? What will she do for her birthday? what did you do on your last birthday?

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a challenging comprehension reading task

. They read the text, the first time for gist, on their own and check with their partners their predictions

While-Reading #2 • To provide students with a challenging comprehension reading task

. Give them a handout that has her life changes, Ex.3 on page 71, to order the main events of Maria's life according to the text . They read again to order

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

. Personalize the lesson, speaking in pairs about a set of questions I provide in a handout regarding life stages, birthdays, age . Change pairs to give them more chances of speaking . Add one more question on the board 'How has life changed since you were a child?' . Do some error correction about the way they answer from the monitoring I did during the post reading activity
