Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a argument paragraph in the context of Health and life expectancy at birth

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review in the context of Health and life expectancy at birth

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll show the students the schedule for life expectancy at birth, make them try to understand the schedule, and analyze it by answering the 3 questions in pairs.

Model / Text Analysis (5-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Show student ex.12.1 and tell them that today we will practice only one part of the essay, which is writing an argument paragraph. After, I'll show the student a sample paragraph and ask them to "underline the topic sentence, circle the evidence, and highlight the linking word". to elicit how to write the paragraph. Then make them check in pairs and provide the model answer

Productive Task(s) Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Show them the same paragraph, but they have to "put them in the correct order to make a strong argument paragraph. Write what they are (topic –supporting -idea- evidence explanation). First, they will answer alone pair check alone, then I'll provide the model answer

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

ill show this on the ppt "Choose one factor (e.g., income, gender, geography). Write one short paragraph (4–6 sentences) that defends your opinion about why this factor is important.. Use evidence from the WHO tab Provide some sentences for weak students, like: "One important reason is that… For example, according to the WHO data… Some people say… however…" After they finish, I mark each paragraph based on Task Achievement (did they answer the question?) "Coherence & Cohesion (is it organized, are linkers used?) Lexical Resource (vocabulary range and accuracy) Grammatical Range & Accuracy Mechanics (spelling, punctuation) " Use a positive tone while giving them the feedback
