Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, practice and review of Cooking words in the context of Food

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a Discussion in the context of Food

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be asked to observe a video and try to guess what today's theme would be around. The video contains an age appropriate clip from the TV Series Fiends when Rachel tried to cook for the first time

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Students will be shown pictures of the 5 new vocabulary words and will in pairs determine if they know the words

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

I will tell a short story about an interesting cooking experience that I had as an assistant chef in a 5-star hotel and how the meals were ruined. The story will include the 5 new vocabulary words, that can be easily guessed from the context. Students will then work in groups of 3 to spot the new vocabulary words and try to guess their meanings. CCQs then will be arranged after eliciting the meanings of the word to check the students' understanding of the new words. Afterwards, the words will be drilled and written in front of the students on the board to act as a reference to them when doing the last activity

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

To test the accuracy, students will be given individual tests to fill in the blanks using the correct vocabulary (the 5 new words). Students will then check their answers in pairs before the answers are displayed on the screen

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will work in groups of four to roleplay that they are helping each other prepare a meal from scratch, using the new vocabulary
