Main Aims

  • To provide skimming and detailed reading practice using a text about why aren't women's sports as popular as men's.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of sports. Commenting what they think about the topic.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage, the students are asked: Do you like sports? Which sports do you like? Do you watch women's sports?

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students are going to be taught the meaning of the following vocabulary: Serve - Opponent - Return - Identical - Popular - Strength - Individual - Inferior with the definitions and then they will be asked to use them in examples.

While-Reading #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

In this stage, students will read some comments people posted on a forum. They are asked to answer the following questions: Find one person who obviously prefers women's sports and one who obviously prefers men's sports. (page 79 part B)

While-Reading #2 (4-8 minutes) • To scan reading in order to match some headings

In this stage, the students are asked to read the text A-F again and match them to the main point that each person is making. (page 79 part C) They will be asked to discuss their answers.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students will be asked to discuss the following question in pairs: Why aren't women's sports as popular as men's?
