Description

In this lesson, students wil able to talk about their town and learn the vocabulary about their town's city center such as art gallery, library, main station etc. and then they will discuss about their town's features and compare it to the city New Castle.

Main Aims

  • To provide vocabulary cpractice of town in the context of library, shopping centre, bus station, bridge, art gallery, bars and retaurants, opera house and stadium.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy in the context of places in cities and directions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher provides a lead-in that will get Sts interacting together in a way that provides interest and motivation. The teacher provides a set of questions about 'getting lost' (such as Look at the picture and discuss where are they?/ What are they doing?) and wants her Sts to discuss this topic in pairs.Then, the teacher monitors Sts closely then get some FB.

Vocabulary( True or False) Activity (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to check the words about places and directions

The teacher shows a hand-out and explains it to the class. After setting the task, Sts starts doing the exercise on their own. Then, teacher puts her Sts into pairs and they discusses their answers.

Reading (8-12 minutes) • To provide students read the map and name the places and directions

Teacher gives a map as a HO and attracks Sts' attention to this map. Then, she puts Sts into pairs then tells that one of the pair is a lost visitor and the other pair is a local. Then, lost visitor chooses a place in the map and asks how to go there from the school. Her/ his pair tries to tell the directions in TL and lost visitor notes the directions. Then, the teacher changes pairs and Sts discuss the directions with their new pair.

Speaking Activity (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information speaking tasks

The teacher shows a HO to her Sts and explain what is written in the box. This is a quick check questions hand-out . Sts can choose any city optional and discuss that questions with pairs and note the answers then she switches pairs to check the answers.

Pre-Teach Essential Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

The teacher shows some places in a town from the power point presentation and asks from her students to discuss this places ( Look at the picture and discuss what they can do in that place. ). Then, Sts practise pronunciation of the words by repeating the word that they can see on the board. After that, the teacher asks if they have the same or similiar places in their town and in pairs, Sts starts to discuss about that task.Then, to give Sts confidence, the teacher gives HO to the students. In that HO, there are words and pictures seperately.In pairs, each Sts has to match the words with pictures.

Listening Activity (10-12 minutes) • To provide students understand the directions and write the directions that they heard

Teacher tells her Sts that they will listen audio tracks twice. First time, they will do gist listening and teacher wants them to listen the tracks and try to undertand. But, second time, teacher tells to her Sts that they have to take some quick notes about the directions that they'll hear and Sts need to circle on the map the places that they walk past. Then, the teacher plays the audio track from the coursebook twice and Sts listen three dialogues. They are about two football supporters want to get from the football stadium in Newcastle to the train station. When they are done, the teacher wants from her Sts to discuss their answers in pairs.

Back Up (3-5 minutes) • To provide students to back up the lesson

The teacher repeats all they have done during the lesson and check the pronunciations for back up.
