Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn some vocabulary for expressing technology problems and solutions.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of vocabulary for problems and solutions in the context of technology

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop speaking fluency and active listening

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start by asking students: "How are you? Where are you? What were you doing before the lessons?" Show SS a picture of a man sitting in front of a computer. T asks: "Where is he? What is he doing? Does he look happy?". T shows next slide revealing that the man is crashing his keyboard against his computer. T asks: "Why is he doing that?" (A problem with his computer) "Have you ever had problems with technology?". T nominates SS to participate.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a situation

Before playing the recording, T pre-teaches that word ATM. T asks CCQS: "Is it a machine where you get money from?"(YES) "Is it in a bank?" (YES). T shows the meaning of ATM (Automated Teller Machine). T shares a G-Form via chat. SS need to listen to four recordings where people are having problems of different kinds, and match them to the right picture. T gives instructions and asks ICQS to check understanding: "Do you need to read or listen?" (LISTEN), "During the listening, "do you complete anything or match?" (MATCH) T plays the recording and SS do the task. ANSWERS: Conversation 1 > Picture B Conversation 2 > Picture D Conversation 3 > Picture A Conversation 4 > Picture C T does OCFB by showing answers SS submitted.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Share Wordwall activity via chatbox. Model the activity where SS match the problems they heard to the right category. Answers: NOT WORKING / HAVING PROBLEMS: - broken down - doesn't work - out of order - crashed/frozen SOLVING PROBLEMS / FINDING SOLUTIONS: - needs fixing - sort it out - needs recharing - switch it off At the end SS submit answers. Use response tool to give OCFB.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Show G-Slides (slides 10,11,12,13) to check understading of the most difficult words by using CCQS. * BROKEN DOWN Meaning: I’m afraid the car is broken down. CCQS: If a car is broken down, does it work?(NO) Can it move? (NO) * SORT OUT Meaning: Let’s call a mechanic to sort_it_out. CCQS: If you sort a problem out, do you solve/find a solution for it? (YES) Form: Ask SS the type of word it is. (PHRASAL VERB). Ask: Is it possible to change the order? For example, sort out it? (NO) T explains that the pronoun is always between the main verb and particle. * OUT OF ORDER Meaning: Oh no! the ATM is out_of_order. CCQS: If the ATM is out of order, can we use it? (NO) Is there a problem with it? (YES) Form: Tell SS "out of service" is also possible. * CRASHED: Meaning: It’s crashed because of a virus. CCQS: If a computer is crashed, can you use it? (NO) Is there a problem with the computer? (YES) FORM: Ask SS what type of word it is. (ADJECTIVE) SWITCH OFF: Meaning: Just switch_it_off and then turn it on again. CCQS: Do you switch off a mobile phone, to keep or solve a problem? (SOLVE) If you switch if off, can you use it? (NO) What's the opposite of it? (SWITCH ON) Form: Ask SS the type of word it is. (PHRASAL VERB). Ask: Is it possible to change the order? For example, switch off it? (NO) T explains that the pronoun is always between the main verb and particle. T shows slide with four of the sentences. Do drilling at word and sentence level by playing a recording. - I’m afraid the car is broken down. Stress: BROKEN DOWN - Let’s call a mechanic to sort_it_out. Stress: SORT/OUT Linking sounds: SORT_IT_OUT - Oh no! the ATM is out_of_order. Stress: OUT/ORDER Linking sounds:OUT_OF_ORDER - Just switch_it_off and then turn it on again. Stress: SWITCH/OFF Linking sounds: SWITCH_IT_OFF T have SS repeat the sentences

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Show G-form. Ask Ss to read sentences and choose the correct word. There is one answer only. Share G-Form in chat. Allow 2 mins. Ss compare answers in BOR before submitting answers, if time available. ANSWERS: 1. down 2. recharging 3. order 4. switching 5. crashed 6. doesn't work 7. sort 8. needs fixing SS compare answers in BORs and then, submit answers. T does OCFB using the response tool.

Free Practice (6-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Show G-Slide. Tell Ss to answer two questions: - What is the biggest problem with technology nowadays? - What technology problem has happened to you or anyone you know recently? How did you solve it? Ask them to take notes for 1-2 minutes in the slides. Emphasise that note-taking, listening to their partners and using the target language practised in class are essential. SS are sent to BORs and discuss the questions. T provides OCFB on content and language.
